Richard Oates Boggess (1833-1896)

Richard Oates Boggess was born on April 27, 1833 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was the last of six children born to Lemuel Boggess, Sr. and Rachel Oates .  His father died the same year Richard was born, and his mother remarried three years later.  He grew up on the family farm in Muhlenberg, and eventually became the sixth of thirteen children.

Richard married Sarah Elizabeth “Sallie” Railey on June 19, 1860 in Cass County, Missouri.  He was 26 years old and she was 19 years.  Sallie was born on May 14, 1840 in Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky, the daughter of Tarleton Railey and Mary W. Blackwell.

After their marriage, Richard and Sallie settled in Harrisonville, Cass County, Missouri, where Richard was employed as an attorney.  They had two children:

 Earle Montrose Boggess      born August 1861
 Cecelia Boggess                  born 1863


In 1870, Richard and Sallie and their children were living in Grand River, Cass County, Missouri. 

By 1880, the family had moved to Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. 

Richard Oates Boggess died on August 3, 1896 in Jackson County, Missouri.  He was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri.  He was 63 years old at his death.

In 1900, Sallie was living with her married sister, Catherine “Kittie” Hocker, in her home in Salt Pond, Saline County, Missouri.  Her widowed mother was also listed in the household. 

Sarah Elizabeth Railey Boggess died on December 19, 1903 in Jackson County, Missouri.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri.  She was 68 years old at her death.
