Estella Hobbs (1892-1966)

Estella Hobbs



Estella Hobbs was born March 12, 1892 in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  She was the third of five children born to John Thomas Hobbs and Rachel Ann Herndon.  She was raised on the family farm in Chaplin, Nelson, Kentucky.



Estella married William Thomas Edwards around 1911 in Nelson or Spencer County, Kentucky.   She was 19 years old and he was 22.  William was born on November 1, 1888 in Kentucky, the son of Thomas Lee Edwards and Mary J. Lane.



Edward and Estella made their home in Spencer County, Kentucky, where Edward worked as a farmer.  They had four children:



            Irene                            born 1912

            Hally M.                      born 1915

            Ralph Woodrow         born 1918

            Marjorie                       born 1921



Estella Hobbs Edwards died on November 14, 1966 at the age of 74.  She was buried in Valley Cemetery in Taylorsville, Spencer, Kentucky.  William died 16 years later, on February 4, 1982, at the age of 93.  He was buried in the same place.

William J. Hobbs (1889- )

William J. Hobbs




William J. Hobbs was born in October 1889 in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  He was the second of five children born to John Thomas Hobbs and Rachel Ann Herndon.  He was raised on the family farm in Chaplin, Nelson, Kentucky.

In 1910, William was living and working with his parents on his family’s farm in Chaplin, Kentucky.

Hubert H. Hobbs (1887-1974)

Hubert H. Hobbs


Hubert H. Hobbs was born on October 26, 1887 in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  He was the eldest of five children born to John Thomas Hobbs and Rachel Ann Herndon.  He was raised on the family farm in Chaplin, Nelson, Kentucky.

Hubert married Mayme Porter around 1910 in Nelson, Kentucky.  He was 22 years old and she was 25 years.  Mayme was born about 1884 in Kentucky. 

Hubert and Mayme made their home in Van Dyke, Anderson County, Kentucky.  Hubert enlisted for the draft for World War I on June 5, 1917 in Van Dyke County, Kentucky.  At that time, he was self-employed as an insurance agent.  He claimed exemption from the draft because he was the sole provider for his wife and her mother, Mary E. Porter.  He also was crippled in one leg.  Hubert was described as tall and slender, with grey eyes and black hair.  By 1930, the couple were living in Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky.

Mayme Porter Hobbs died on November 4, 1967 in Franklin, Anderson County, Kentucky.  She was 83 years old at her death.  Hubert went on to live another seven years after his wife’s death.  Hubert H. Hobbs died at the age of 86 on May 17, 1974 in the same place.

John Thomas Hobbs (1859-1939)

John Thomas Hobbs


John “Thomas” Hobbs was born on September 11, 1859 in Nelson County, Kentucky.  He was the eldest of five children born to William M. Hobbs and Sarah Graves.  He was raised on the family farm in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.

Thomas married Rachel Ann “Annie” Herndon on May 25, 1887 in Nelson County.  He was 27 years old and she was 30 years.  Annie was born on October 8, 1856 in Kentucky.  They were the parents of five children:

            William J.                    born October 1889
            Estella                         born March 12, 1892
            Catherine                     born March 1894
            Maggie                        born November 1896

Like his father, Thomas was a farmer.  He and Annie raised their children on their farm in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  Sometime after 1910, Thomas and Annie moved their family to Taylorsville in Spencer County, Kentucky.

Rachel Ann Herndon Hobbs died in Taylorsville, Spencer, Kentucky, on October 20, 1917, shortly after her 61st birthday.

By 1920, Thomas had married Sallie B. (maiden name unknown) and the two were living and working on Thomas’ farm in Taylorsville.  Sallie was born about 1864 in Kentucky. 

Just four days after his 80th birthday, John Thomas Hobbs died on September 15, 1939, in Taylorsville, Spencer, Kentucky.
