Edward Moore McCandless (1892-1971)

Edward Moore McCandless was born in 1892 in Kentucky.  He was the son of John William McCandless and Carrie Day Humphrey

Edward married Myrtle Hobbs on February 20, 1912 in Nelson County, Kentucky.  He was 20 years old and she was 16 years.  Myrtle was born on January 15, 1896 in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky, the daughter of George Edward Hobbs and Salena Knightly.

Myrtle passed away just five years after her marriage to Edward.  She died on March 5, 1917 in Nelson County, Kentucky, and was buried in Chaplin.

In 1920, Edward was living in Callensville, Pendleton County, Kentucky.  He was rooming with his married sister, Ethel Denny, and her husband, John.  Edward and John were both employed as laborers on a farm.

Edward remarried sometime between 1925 and 1930.  His new bride, Josephine Barnett, had been married once before as well. 

Josephine was born about 1893 in Kentucky.  Her first marriage was around 1917 and she had at least one child:

In 1930, Edward, Josephine, and Margrete were living in Taylorsville, Spencer County, Kentucky.  Edward was employed as a building carpenter and was also listed as a veteran of the World War.  He and his family lived near the home of Myrtle’s uncle, John Thomas Hobbs, and his wife, Sallie. 
    
Edward Moore McCandless died on November 29, 1971 at the VA Medical Center in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, at the age of 79 years.  He was a widow at his death, indicating that Josephine died sometime between 1930 and 1971.

Carrie Day Humphrey (1876-1938)

Carrie Day Humphrey was born on August 15, 1876 in Harrison County, Kentucky.  She was the daughter of Enoch Humphrey and Zerelda D. Eckler.

Carrie married John William McCandless on February 3, 1887 in Harrison County, Kentucky.  The marriage certificate declared that Carrie was 16 years old and that John was 26 years.  John was born in 1861 in Kentucky, the son of William K. and Susan McCandless.  They had at least two children:
           
            Ethel P.                      born 1890
            Edward Moore          born 1892

Carrie married a second time on July 25, 1906 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.  She married Francis “Frank” William Hendy, the son of Francis Thomas Hendy and Eunice Alice McClure.  Frank was born on January 25, 1875 in Grant County, Kentucky.

In 1910, the couple was living with Frank’s parents in Richland, Harrison County, Kentucky.  Frank was employed as a farmer on a corn and tobacco farm.  In this census, Carrie is listed as the mother of three children, with two still living. 

On September 12, 1918, Frank registered for the draft for the First World War.  He was described as tall and slender, with blue eyes and red hair. 

Frank and Carrie were living in McKennysburg, Pendleton County, Kentucky, in 1930, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. 

Carrie Day Humphrey McCandless Hendy died on November 11, 1938 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.  The cause of death listed was a cerebral hemorrhage.  She was 62 years old at her death. 

Francis “Frank” William Hendy died on September 30, 1962 in the same place.  He was 87 years old.

Ethel McCandless (1890-1964)

Ethel P. McCandless was born around 1890 in Kentucky, the daughter of John William McCandless and Carrie Day Humphrey

Ethel married John William Denny on December 9, 1908, in Pendleton County, Kentucky.  She was 18 years old, and he was 28 years.  John was born on September 7, 1879 in Kentucky.

After their marriage, John and Ethel settled in Callensville, Pendleton, Kentucky, where John was working as a farm laborer.  John and Ethel had at least five children:

            Raymond D.               born 1913
            Edith M.                      born 1918
            Melvin W.                   born 1922
            Carrie R.                      born 1925
            Mildred P.                   born 1927

John registered for the draft for the First World War on September 12, 1918 in Pendleton, Kentucky.  At that time, he and Ethel were living on a farm in Boyd, Harrison County, Kentucky.  John was described as being of medium height and build, with blue eyes and light hair.

John William Denny died on February 26, 1961 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.  He was 81 years old at his death.  Ethel died just three years later.
           
Ethel P. McCandless Denny died on May 11, 1964 in Kenton County, Kentucky at the age of 74 years.

Myrtle Hobbs (1896-1917)

Myrtle Hobbs

Myrtle Hobbs was born on January 15, 1896 in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  She was the second of seven children born to George Edward Hobbs and Salena Knightly.  She was raised on the family farm in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.

On February 20, 1912, Myrtle married Edward Moore McCandless in Nelson County, Kentucky.  She was 16 years old and he was about 20 years.  Edward was born in 1892 in Kentucky, the son of John William McCandless and Carrie Day Humphrey.


Myrtle passed away just five years after her marriage to Edward.  She died on March 5, 1917 in Nelson County, Kentucky, and was buried in Chaplin.
