John
Bailey Blackwell was
born on May 1, 1840 in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. He was the son of William Marshall Blackwell
and Martha Elizabeth Strader. John was
raised on the family farm in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.
John enlisted for service in the Civil
War on October 1, 1861 in Calhoon, Kentucky.
Fighting on the Union side, John served in Company K, Kentucky 11th
Infantry Regiment. He was a Second
Corporal when the regiment mustered out on December 16, 1864.
On April 20, 1865, John married Mary
Susan Wyatt in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.
He was 24 years old and she was 20 years. Mary was born on May 13, 1843 in Muhlenberg
County, Kentucky, the daughter of Needham Thomas Wyatt and Martha Ann
Mann.
John and Mary were the parents of at
least six children:
Marshall Needham Blackwell born March 1866
Martha Elizabeth Blackwell born May 8, 1868
Lula G. Blackwell born January 16,
1870
William Dallas Blackwell born September 24, 1871
Charles E. Blackwell born October 1873
John H. Blackwell born May 23, 1875
In 1870, John and Mary were living and
working on a farm in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. John’s real estate was valued at $600 and his
personal estate at $300.
Their young daughter, Lula G.
Blackwell, died on June 8, 1871. Lula
was buried in the Wyatts Chapel Cemetery in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. She was 17 months old at her death.
Mary Susan Wyatt Blackwell died five
years later, on October 18, 1876 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. The cause of death listed was consumption. She was laid to rest near her daughter, Lula,
in the Wyatts Chapel Cemetery in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Mary was 33 years old at her death.
John remarried on December 19, 1877 to
Mary Idumea “Ida” Cessna in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. This was Idumea’s first marriage. She was born on April 2, 1847 in Kentucky, the
daughter of Robert John Culbertson Cessna and Angeline J. Calvert.
John and Ida had the following four
children:

July 1880
Ora L. Blackwell born November 1886
Thomas Clyde Blackwell born
May 21, 1890
John and Ida raised their family in
Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. John was a
farmer by trade, and Ida kept house. In
1880, the family was living in Court House, Muhlenberg County. By 1900, they were living in Bremen,
Muhlenberg County. In 1910, their farm
was located on Main Street in Bremen.
John Bailey Blackwell died on February
13, 1915 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.
The cause of death listed was pneumonia.
He was buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Greenville, Muhlenberg
County, Kentucky. John was 74 years old
at his death.
In 1920, Ida was still living in the
family home in Bremen, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.
Mary Idumea Cessna Blackwell died on
February 2, 1933 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. She was laid to rest in Shaver’s Chapel
United Methodist Church Cemetery in Bremen, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Ida was 85 years old at her death.
This

Smith of Westmoreland County, Virginia: Some of his Virginia, North Carolina,
