Raymond Oates Boggess

Son of Arthur Haise Boggess & Magnolia Elizabeth Oates

Raymond Oates Boggess was born December 19, 1912 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  He was the youngest of eight children born to Arthur Haise Boggess and Magnolia Elizabeth Oates.  Raymond grew up on the family farm in Galla Creek in Pope County.  He labored on the farm while his father worked at the general store.  He was living with his family in 1930.

When he was about 30 years old, Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 24, 1942.  He was not married when he enlisted.  He had one year of college education and his Civil Occupation was that of a Blaster or Powderman.  He was 5’ 10” tall and slender, weighing in at 157 pounds.  He was a Private in the 161^st Infantry 25^th Division. 

Following is an excerpt from “A Brief History of the 25^th Infantry Division”:

   On 3 August 1942 the 298th Infantry Regiment was replaced by the 161st Infantry Regiment of the Washington National Guard which had been in route to the Philippine Islands when the Japanese attacked and was diverted to Hawaii. In November 1942 the Division underwent intensive jungle and amphibious warfare training and sailed for Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands to relieve the 1st Marine Division. The 25th operating as part of the XIV Corps commenced offensive operations against the Japanese on 7 January 1943. In less than a month and against a determined enemy who offered fierce resistance the 25th Division wiped out the Japanese dug in on Mount Austin and conducted an envelopment through the jungle to cut off retreating Japanese forces. For its valor on Mount Austin the 35th Infantry Regimental Combat Team consisting of the 35th Infantry Regiment, the 64th Field Artillery Battalion and the 25th Reconnaissance Troop was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. The operations of the 25th Division on Guadalcanal were impressive, earning it the nickname of "Tropic Lightning".

Raymond Oates Boggess was killed on January 27, 1943 in the conflict at Guadalcanal.  He was 30 years old at his death.

Raymond’s awards included the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart Medals.  He is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of The Pacific, located at 2177 Puowaina Drive Honolulu, HI 96813.  His burial plot is located in Section E, Site 295.

Harold Boggess (1903- )

Harold Boggess was born October 18, 1903 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  He was the seventh of eight children born to Arthur Haise Boggess and Magnolia Elizabeth Oates. 

Harold was raised on the family farm in Galla Creek in Pope County.  He was attending school and living with his family in 1920.

Frank C. Boggess (1901-1935)

Frank C. Boggess was born November 11, 1901 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  The sixth of eight children born to Arthur Haise Boggess & Magnolia Elizabeth Oates, Frank grew up on the family farm in Galla Creek in Pope County.  He labored on the farm while his father worked at the general store.  Frank was attending school and living with his family in 1920.

Frank married Effie Brashears on April 2, 1923 in Pope County, Arkansas.  Frank and Effie were both 21 years old.  Effie was born on March 2, 1902 in Plainview, Yell County, Arkansas, the daughter of Lemuel Casziel Brashears and Mary Ellen Hogan. 

After their marriage, Frank and Effie settled their family in Plainview, Yell County, Arkansas. 

Frank and Effie were the parents of at least one child:

Natalie Boggess       born December 16, 1923

Frank C. Boggess died on November 20, 1935.  He was buried in the Pisgah Cemetery in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  Frank was 34 years old at his death.

After her husband’s death, Effie remained in Plainview to raise her daughter.  By 1953, she was living at 13 Rugg Street in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas.  She was employed as a clerk at that time.

Thomas Haise Boggess (1896-1936)

Thomas Haise Boggess was born on December 18, 1896 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  Thomas was often known by his middle name, Haise or Hayes.  He was presumably the fourth or fifth child born to Arthur Haise Boggess and Magnolia Elizabeth Oates.  In the 1900 Census, Magnolia is listed as the mother of five children with two living at the time.  Thus, three children must have been born and died before 1900, making Thomas the second child to survive childhood, and the fourth or fifth child born to Arthur and Magnolia.

Haise grew up on the family farm in Galla Creek in Pope County.  He labored on the farm while his father worked at the general store.  Thomas registered for the Draft for World War I on June 5, 1918 in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas, while he was still living and working on the farm in Galla Creek.  He was of medium height and build and had blue eyes and light brown hair.  Haise was a veteran of World War I.

On December 28, 1917, Thomas Haise married Laura Jane Brashears in Plain View, Yell County, Arkansas.  Thomas was 20 years old and Laura was 19 years.  Laura was born on June 3, 1897 in Arkansas, the daughter of Lemuel Casziel Brashears and Mary Ellen Hogan.

After their marriage, Haise and Laura settled down on a farm in Galla Creek, Pope County, Arkansas.  They lived on Hills Bend Road, not far from Haise’s parents.  Haise worked as a retail merchant, probably at the store where his father, Arthur, worked.  In 1930, Haise and his family resided in Illinois, Pope County, Arkansas.  They lived in a house which they rented for $20.00 a month, located at 701 South Erie Avenue.  Haise was employed as a Cotton Buyer for a Cotton Firm.  

By 1930, Haise and Laura had two daughters: 

Ellen B. Boggess            born December 15, 1918 
Laura Boggess               born 1923

Thomas Haise Boggess died on July 26, 1936 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.  He was 39 years old at his death.  Laura went on to live another 41 years after her husband’s death.  

Laura Boggess died in May 1977 in Belmont, Middlesex, Massachusetts, near where her eldest daughter, Ellen B. Marino, lived.  Laura was one month shy of her 80^th birthday when she died.

Magnolia Belle Boggess (1888- )

Magnolia Belle Boggess

Daughter of Arthur Haise Boggess & Magnolia Elizabeth Oates

Magnolia Belle Boggess was born in January 1888 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  She was the first child born to Arthur Haise Boggess and Magnolia Elizabeth Oates, and was obviously her mother’s namesake.

Magnolia lived with her parents on their farm in Galla Creek, Pope County, Arkansas, at least until 1910.  She was 21 years old at that time, and was employed as a teacher in a public school.

Arthur Haise Boggess (1861-1939)

Arthur Haise Boggess

Son of Charles Haise Boggess & Isabella C. Martin

Arthur Haise Boggess was born February 20, 1861 in Springfield, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was the fifth child born to Charles and Isabella Boggess.  In 1880, Arthur lived with his parents on a farm in Illinois Township in Pope County, Arkansas.  He worked with his father and brother on the farm. 

Arthur married Magnolia Elizabeth Oates in 1887, probably in Illinois, Pope County, Arkansas.  Arthur was 26 years old and Magnolia was 19.  Magnolia was born in March 1868 in Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas Oates and Melissa Grace Leslie McElwee. 

Arthur and Magnolia had eight children, five of which grew to adulthood.

In 1900, Arthur and Magnolia owned a farm in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  Arthur was a Dry Goods Merchant at that time.  By 1910, they had established themselves on a farm in Gala Creek Township in Pope County, where Arthur was a Retail Merchant at a General Store.  The family remained here at least until 1930.

           

Magnolia Elizabeth Oates Boggess died at the age of 66, on July 5, 1934 in Pope County, Arkansas.  Arthur passed away five years later on May 15, 1939, also in Pope County.  He was 78 years old.
