William Ross Utley (1886-1965)

Son of William Obediah Utley & Cynthia Ann Wickliffe

 

 

William Ross Utley was born September 25, 1886 in Madisonville, Hopkins, Kentucky.  He was the last of five children born to William Obediah Utley and Cynthia Ann Wickliffe.  His mother died when he was just three years old. 

In 1900, Ross was living with his sister, Elizabeth C. Nourse, and her husband, John, and their children, in Kitchen, Hopkins County, Kentucky. 

On December 1, 1909 Ross married Bonnaline Martin in Madisonville, Hopkins, Kentucky.  He was 23 years old and she was 19 years.  Bonnaline was born August 19, 1890, also in Madisonville. 

Shortly after their marriage, Ross and Bonnaline settled on a rented farm on Pleasant View Road in District 7, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  Their farm was near the one owned by Ross’s eldest brother, Aspsia Utley.  They also had one daughter:  

                  Mary W.        born on November 28, 1911.

On June 5, 1917, Ross registered for the draft for World War I.  He was ranked as a Private, having been in the Kentucky State Militia for three years already.  He and Bonnaline, and their daughter Mary, were living on a farm which they had purchased on Kirtwood Road in Manitow, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  Ross was described as short, of medium build, with blue eyes and dark grey hair.

William Ross and Bonnaline Martin Utley lived the rest of their lives in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  Ross died there on August 2, 1965, just one month short of his 79^th birthday.  Bonnaline lived another 15 years after her husband’s death. 

Bonnaline Martin Utley died on April 29, 1980 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  She was 89 years old at her death.

Elizabeth Celia Utley (1873-1949)

Elizabeth Celia Utley was born October 26, 1873 in Seminary, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  She was the fourth of five children born to William Obediah Utley and Cynthia Ann Wickliffe.  She was raised on the family farm in Seminary, Hopkins County, Kentucky.

Bettie married John Davis Nourse on October 4, 1893 in Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  She was 20 years old and he was 22 years.  John was born March 6, 1871 in Madisonville, the son of James Robert Nourse and Mary Harpending Davis. 

By 1910, John and Bettie had established themselves on a farm on Pleasant View Road, in Madisonville.  It was located near the farm of Aspasia Utley, Bettie’s older brother.  John and Bettie had three children:

                        James Frank             born March 2, 1895

                        Irene Delle                born February 27, 1897

                        Martha Ann               born November 14, 1903

John and Bettie lived the remainder of their lives on their family farm in Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky. 

Elizabeth Celia Utley Nourse died on January 26, 1949 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.  She was 75 years old at her death.  John followed exactly six years later.  John Davis Nourse died on January 2, 1955 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was 83 years old at his death.

Delmont Utley (1870-1964)

Delmont Utley was born on November 9, 1870 in Seminary, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was the third of five children born to William Obediah Utley and Cynthia Ann Wickliffe.  He was raised on the family farm in Seminary, Hopkins County, Kentucky.

On June 27, 1900 Delmont married Margret May Slaton in Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was 29 years old and she was 22 years.  Margret was born October 18, 1877 in Madisonville.  Delmont and Margret had four children:

After their marriage, Delmont and Margret purchased a home on Seminary Street in Madisonville, where they remained for the rest of their lives.  In 1910, Delmont was employed as a teacher in the city school in Madisonville.  By 1920, he was working as a salesman in a furniture store. 

Margret May Slaton Utley died on March 6, 1956 in Hopkins County, Kentucky at the age of 78 years.  Delmont lived another eight years after his wife’s death.  Delmont Utley died on May 22, 1964 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was 93 years old at his death.

Daughter of William Obediah Utley & Cynthia Ann Wickliffe

Halcyon Utley was born July 3, 1865 in Seminary, Hopkins, Kentucky.    She was the eldest of five children born to William Obediah Utley and Cynthia Ann Wickliffe.  She was raised on the family farm in Seminary, Hopkins County, Kentucky.

Halsie married Charles Edmond Slaton on January 1, 1890 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  She was 24 years old and he was 26 years.  Charles was born in Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky on February 24, 1863.  He was the son of Arthur Walker Slaton and Mary O’Bryan.  Charles and Halsie were the parents of two children:

            Fulton Edmond        born on December 16, 1894

            Othur Utley                born on March 22, 1896

After their marriage, Charles and Halsie and their children lived and worked on a farm in Hopkins County, Kentucky until they relocated to New Mexico between 1900 and 1910.  They farmed in Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico, until their move to California sometime in the 1920’s.    

Charles Edmond Slaton died just before the 1930 US Census, as Halsie was listed as a widow then.  He was about 70 years old at his death.  Halsie went on to live another 31 years after her husband’s death.  She died in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California in July 1961, at the age of 95.  Halsie Utley Slaton is buried in Angels Abbey, Compton County, California.

Cynthia Ann Wickliffe (1844-1889)

Cynthia Ann Wickliffe

Daughter of John Davis Wickliffe and Rachel Oates Boggess

Cynthia Ann Wickliffe was born on April 4, 1844 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was the fourth child born to John D. Wickliffe, but the tenth born to Rachel Oates Boggess Wickliffe.   

On September 6, 1865, Cynthia married William Obadiah Utley in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was 21 years old and he was 33 years.  Obadiah was born on February 14, 1832 in Kentucky. 

Obadiah and Cynthia raised their children on their farm in Seminary, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  They had the following five children:

                        Aspasia                                  born March 4, 1868

                        Delmont                                 born November 9, 1870

                        Elizabeth Celia                     born October 26, 1873

                        William Ross                         born September 25, 1886

Cynthia Ann Wickliffe Utley died just three years after the birth of her youngest child.  She died on September 6, 1889 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.  She was 45 years old at her death. 

After his wife’s death, Obediah lived the rest of his life in Hopkins County, with his son, Aspasia, and his family.  William Obediah Utley died on September 30, 1920 in Kitchen, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was 88 years old.
