Eli Hamilton Milton Hobbs (1843-1914)

Eli Hamilton Milton Hobbs was born in September 1843 in Muhlenberg, Kentucky.  He was the last of five children born to Eli B. Hobbs and Lavina McMakin.

Eli married Henrietta Arb around 1876, probably in Columbiana County, Ohio.  He was about 34 years old and she was around 24 years.  Henrietta was born in September 1853 in Liverpool, Columbiana, Ohio, the daughter of Jacob Arb and Mary Foutts.

In 1900, Eli and Henrietta and their children were living in a home on North Avenue in East Liverpool, Columbiana, Ohio.  Eli was working as a clay miner.  Eli and Henrietta had nine children, with only five living to adulthood:

Eli Hamilton Milton Hobbs died on April 22, 1912 in East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio, at the age of 68 years.  Henrietta died two years later.

Henrietta Arb Hobbs died on February 24, 1914 in the same place.  She was 60 years old at her death.

Susan Elizabeth Hobbs (1839-1856)

Susan Elizabeth Hobbs was born about 1839 in Nelson, Kentucky.  She was the third of five children born to Eli B. Hobbs and Lavina McMakin.

Susan died at the age of 17 on October 28, 1856 in Nelson County, Kentucky.  The cause of death listed was consumption.

Margaret Hamilton Hobbs (1837- )

Margaret Hamilton Hobbs was born in August 1837, in Nelson, Kentucky.  She was the second of five children born to Eli B. Hobbs and Lavina McMakin.

On August 29, 1856, Margaret married James Doak Irvin in Nelson, Kentucky.

William M. Hobbs (1832-1873)

William M. Hobbs

Son of Eli B. Hobbs & Lavina McMakin

William M. Hobbs was born in February 1832, in Nelson, Kentucky.  He was the eldest of five children born to Eli Hobbs and Lavina McMakin.

William married Sarah Ann Graves on September 16, 1858 in Nelson, Kentucky.  He was 26 years old and she was just a few weeks shy of her 20^th birthday.  Sarah was born on October 2, 1838 in Fayette, Kentucky, the daughter of Thomas Sims Graves and Harriet R. Gist.  William and Sarah had five children:

            James William             born July 11, 1862

            Susan                           born about 1864

            Charles                        born about 1870

            George Edward          born September 20, 1871

William and Sarah raised their family in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  William was a farmer, and Sarah kept house. 

William M. Hobbs died on March 11, 1873 and was buried in Old Methodist Cemetery in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky. 

After her husband’s death, Sarah lived with her youngest son, Edward, and his family, who also lived in Chaplin.  Sarah died on November 20, 1915.  She is also buried in Old Methodist Cemetery in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.

Sarah Ann Bell (1809- )

Sarah Ann Bell was born about 1809 in Greenville, Muhlenberg, Kentucky.  She was the fifth of seven children born to Thomas Bell and Hannah Boggess.

Sarah married Eli B. Hobbs, a native of Kentucky, born about 1803.  Eli was the son of Samuel Eli Hobbs and Elizabeth Hamilton.  Sarah and Eli were married in 1847, presumably in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  This was Eli’s second marriage. 

Eli married Lavina McMakin on September 22, 1825 in Nelson, Kentucky.  Lavina was born on February 12, 1806 in the same county, the daughter of William McMakin and Zilphia Pullen.  In 1840, Eli and Lavina were living in Nelson, Kentucky.  Lavina McMakin Hobbs died in June 1844 in Nelson, Kentucky. 

Eli and Lavina had the following five children:

Eli and Sarah had one daughter:   

                        Martha Ann B. Hobbs                    born 1850

Eli was a Physician and Sarah kept house.  Eli’s profession seemed to move the family around a great deal, as the family was found in several different locations in the Census records.  In 1850 the family was living next to Sarah’s parents, Thomas and Hannah Bell, in District 1, Muhlenberg, Kentucky.  The Eli Hobbs family was found in Rumsey, McLean, Kentucky in 1860, and again in Muhlenberg in 1870.  Eli’s profession must have been very profitable because in 1860 his two eldest children listed in that census possessed personal estate, presumably a dowry, valued at $2,000.00 each.

Eli Hobbs is not found in the 1870 US Census and it is therefore assumed that he died between 1860 and 1870. 

Sarah lived in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky with her youngest daughter, Martha Ann, after her husband died.  She must have died before 1880 as she was not found in that Census.
