James William Hobbs (1862-1925)

James William Hobbs




James William Hobbs was born July 11, 1862 in Nelson County, Kentucky.  He was the second of five children born to William M. Hobbs and Sarah Graves.  He was raised on the family farm in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.

James married Salina (maiden name unknown) around 1883 in Nelson County, Kentucky.  They were both about 23 years old at the time of their marriage.  Salina was born April 25, 1861 in Kentucky.  The couple did not have any children.  James and Salina made their home on a farm in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.

Salina Hobbs died on April 29, 1910 in Nelson County, Kentucky.  She was buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery in Chaplin, Nelson County.  She died four days after her 49th birthday.

James remarried around 1911.  He married Annie E. Hardesty, daughter of William H. Hardesty and Nancy Ray Searcy.  Annie was born on August 8, 1877 in Anderson County, Kentucky. 

James and Annie had one child:

James William, Jr.      born July 4, 1912

Annie E. Hardesty Hobbs died on July 28, 1918 in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  The cause of death was consumption.  She was just a few weeks shy of her 41st birthday.  Annie was buried in Highview Cemetery in Chaplin.

In 1920, James and his son were living and working on their family farm on Asher Creek Road in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.

James William Hobbs died of tuberculosis on June 2, 1925, just a month shy of his 63rd birthday.  He was buried in Highview Cemetery in Chaplin, Kentucky.

After the death of his father, James William Jr. moved in with Samuel and Lizzie Terrell and their family, who also lived on Asher Creek Road.  In the 1930 US Census, they list James as their adopted son.
