Charles W. Hershey (1853-1945)

Charles W. Hershey was born on June 26, 1853 in Illinois.  He was the son of Joseph M. Hershey and Catherine Liard. 

In 1880, Charles and his widowed mother were living in Wabash, Wabash County, Illinois, where Charles was working as a school teacher.

Charles married Laura Belle Swift on March 30, 1884 in Wabash County, Illinois.  He was 31 years old and she was 17 years.  Laura was born on August 26, 1866 in Denison, Lawrence County, Illinois.

Charles and Laura were the parents of five children:

Charles Jeremiah “Jere” Hershey             born January 7, 1885

George V. Hershey                                      born March 29, 1887

Lena Belle Hershey                                     born April 11, 1890

Minnie May Hershey                                   born June 16, 1893

One child born and died between 1884 and 1900

Only three of their five children lived to reach adulthood.  George died at only four months old, on July 27, 1887.  Jere died seven months after the death of his mother, on July 27 1899.  He was 14 years old.  They also had another child, who was born and died between 1884 and 1900.

Charles and Laura and their children moved to Arkansas around 1898. 

Laura Belle Swift Hershey died on January 1, 1899 in either Illinois or Arkansas.  She was 32 years old at her death.

In 1900, Charles and his daughters, Lena and Minnie, were living in Lick Mountain, Conway County, Arkansas.  Charles was working as a teacher at that time.

Charles remarried on June 30, 1901 in Conway County, Arkansas.  He married Laura Gordon, a widow with two daughters. 

In 1910, Charles and Laura were living and working on a farm on Damascus Road in Walker, Faulkner County, Arkansas.  Also listed in their household were their three unmarried daughters: Lena and Minnie Hershey, and Ruby Gordon.

Charles and Laura separated sometime after 1910.  In 1930 and 1940, Charles was living with his married daughter, Minnie Jones, and her family.  Their home was in Craig, Van Buren County, Arkansas.

Charles W. Hershey died on January 11, 1945 in Van Buren County, Arkansas.  He was laid to rest near his son, Jere, in the Culpepper Cemetery in Culpepper, Van Buren County, Arkansas.  Charles was 91 years old at his death.

The following is an excerpt from the “Van Buren County Democrat,” Jan. 19, 1945:

Charles W Hershey, aged 91 years, died at the home of son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Jones near Scotland Saturday, Jan. 13. Interment took place at the cemetery on Culpepper Mountain Sunday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by the Rev A. A. Noggles.

Mr. Hershey was a native of Illinois but came to Van Buren County about 47 years ago, settling on Culpepper Mountain. For about a half-century he devoted his time to school teaching. In his young manhood he was united in marriage to Miss Laura Swift. To their union five children were born and only one of whom, Mrs. Jones, now survives. The wife and mother passed away a good many years since. Mr. Hershey united with the Methodist Church when very young and his life worthily testified in the faith he professed.

George H. Stevenson (1855-1938)

George H. Stevenson was born October 30, 1855 in Boone County, Kentucky.  He was the son of James S. Stevenson and Elizabeth J. Huey.  George’s mother died while he was very young, so he and his father lived with family members during his growing up years.

George married Florence May Clements on September 8, 1886 in Boone County, Kentucky.  He was 30 years old and she was 27 years.  Florence was born in September 1859, the daughter of Roger T. Clements and Minerva J. Riley.

After their marriage, George and Florence settled their family on a farm in Union, Boone County, Kentucky.  They were the parents of ten children:

Florence May Clements Stevenson died before 1910, as George was listed as a widower in that census. 

After the death of his wife, George continued to live and work on the family farm until his death in 1938.

George H. Stevenson suffered a heart attack and died on January 28, 1938 in Union, Boone County, Kentucky.  He was 82 years old at his death.

James S. Stevenson (1822- )

James S. Stevenson was born in November 1822 in Germantown, Bracken County, Kentucky.  He was the son of Stephen Stevenson and Fanny Proctor.  James was raised on the family farm in Bracken County.

By 1850, James had become a physician.  At that time, he was living with his widowed mother, and five of his brothers and sisters. 

James married Elizabeth J. Huey on October 20, 1853 in Boone County, Kentucky.  He was 31 years old and she was 20 years.  Elizabeth was born about 1833 in Boone County.

James and Elizabeth were the parents of four children.  On June 1, 1854, Elizabeth gave birth to triplet girls at just 5 months gestation.  The infants did not survive.  One year later, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Elizabeth J. Huey Stevenson died sometime between 1855 and 1860 in Boone County, Kentucky.  She was in her mid 20’s when she died.

After the death of his wife, James and his son, George, moved in with his sister, Mary Ann Murphy, and her family in Walton, Boone County, Kentucky.

On July 1, 1863 James enlisted for service in the Civil War as a doctor. 

In 1870, James and his son were living with his brother, John, and his family in Kenton County, Kentucky.  By 1880, they were living with James’ mother in Boone County.

In 1900, James was renting a farm in Hamilton, Boone County, Kentucky with his brother, Charles.

Frances Lorena Boggus (1867- bef 1910)

Frances Lorena Boggus was born in May 1867 in either Rapides or Grant County, Louisiana.  She was the daughter of Thomas Henry and Lourena Boggus.  Frances was raised in Grant County, Louisiana.

Frances married John Franklin Crump around 1884 in Grant County, Louisiana.  Frances was about 17 years old and John was around 30 years old.  John was born in November 1854 in Louisiana, the son of William and Julia Crump.  John and Frances had seven children:

            Oliver Frances                     born February 20, 1890

After their marriage, John and Frances settled in Louisiana, probably in Grant County.  Around 1899, they moved their family into a home in Jones County, Texas, where John was employed as a merchant. 

In 1910, John and two of his sons, John and Oliver, were living in Stamford, Jones County, Texas.  John was listed as a widow, Frances having died sometime between 1904 and 1910.  John had found work as a cook in a restaurant, where he worked with his two sons.

Thomas Henry Boggus (1840- bef 1900)

Thomas “Henry” Boggus was born in 1840 in Hempstead County, Arkansas.  He was the son of Peter Boggess and Amanda M. West.  He was raised in Hempstead County, Arkansas and Rapides County, Louisiana.

Henry married Lurena McClelland on May 2, 1860 in the home of a Dr, Bogguss near Pineville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana.  He was 20 years old and she was 17 years.  Lorena was born in December 1843 in Alabama, the daughter of Peter McClelland and Irena Faulk.   The couple was living with Henry’s widowed father in Rapides County, Louisiana in 1860. 

Thomas Henry Boggess served the Confederate States during the Civil War as a Private in Company "G" in the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry.  He enlisted in June 2, 1862 in Alexandria, Louisiana and served until the end of the war in April 1865.  

Henry and Lorena had seven children, with only three living to adulthood:

            Joana                         born December 1861

            Frances Lorena        born May 1867

In 1880, Henry and his family were living on a farm in Grant County, Louisiana.  

Thomas Henry Boggus died on September 6, 1888 near Pineville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana.  The cause of death was "Catarrh Affection contracted during [the] War." He was buried in the family burial ground near Pineville.  

In 1900, Lorena was living with her married daughter, Joana Collingsworth, in Pollock, Grant County, Louisiana.  Lorena continued living with her daughter until her death in 1929.

Lourena Boggus died on April 21, 1929 in Rapides County, Louisiana.  She was 85 years old at her death.

William P. Nichols (1829-bef 1913)

William P. Nichols was born around 1829, probably in either Caldwell County or McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was the son of Jesse Nichols and Elizabeth Wadlington.  He was raised on the family farm in McCracken County, Kentucky. 

William married Sarah A. Rice on February 16, 1854 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was 24 years old and she was 18 years.  Sarah was born about 1835 in Kentucky, the daughter of Samuel Lewis Rice and Jane Morrow.  William and Sarah had at least three children:

After their marriage, William and Sarah made their home on a farm in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky. 

Sarah A. Rice Nichols died around 1871 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  She was in her early 40’s at the time of her death.

William married again on September 8, 1887 in Spencer County, Kentucky.  He married Anna Isabell Bell, daughter of James Montgomery Bell and Mary Ann Elizabeth Hall.  Anna was born on January 15, 1849 in McCracken County.

Anna Isabell Bell Nichols died as a result of liver failure on March 12, 1913 in McCracken County, Kentucky, at the age of 64 years.  She was a widow at the time of her death.
