May Boggess

Daughter of Lemuel Boggess, Jr. & Frances Dargan Adkins

 

 

May Boggess was born in 1868 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was the tenth of eleven children born to Lemuel Boggess, Jr. and Frances D. Adkins.  She and the other children were raised working on the family farm in Muhlenberg County. 

On December 18, 1895, May married Robert M. Hill in Muhlenberg County.  She was 26 years old and he was 30 years.  Robert was born in June 1865, in Tennessee.  After their marriage, they lived and worked on a farm in Hazel, Calloway, Kentucky.  Then around 1906, they relocated their family to a farm in Henry County, Tennessee, where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Robert and May were the parents of six children:

Roxanna A. Boggess (1863-1950)

Roxanna A. Boggess

Daughter of Lemuel Boggess, Jr. & Frances Dargan Adkins

Roxanna A. Boggess was born in 1863 in Henry County, Tennessee.  She was the ninth of eleven children born to Lemuel Boggess, Jr. and Frances D. Adkins.  After her birth, Roxie and her family moved to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She and the other children were raised working on the family farm in Muhlenberg County. 

Roxie married James O. Wakeland in 1902, probably in Henry County, Tennessee.  She was 40 years old and he was 53 years.  James was born in 1849 in Henry County, the son of Milton Wakeland and Lucy Jand Forest.  After their marriage, they settled on a farm in Henry County, near Roxie’s sister, May Hill, and her family.  They had no children.

James O. Wakeland died on May 29, 1916 in Henry County, Tennessee.  He was buried in the Oak Hill Union Church Cemetery in Cottage Grove, Henry County, Tennessee.  He was 53 years old at his death.

In 1920, Roxie was living next to her sister’s family on Hill Street in Civil District 2, Henry County, Tennessee.  Her nephew, Forest Hill, was living with her at that time.  By 1930, she had moved back to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, and was living with her brother, James, and his wife.

Roxanna A. Boggess Wakeland died on October 17, 1950 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was 87 years old at her death.
