Ernest Vale Farmer (1884-1958)

Ernest Vale Farmer was born on December 10, 1884 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  He was the son of Dallas Price Farmer and Wealthy Andrella Longacre.  He was raised on the family farm in Woods, Jefferson County, Kentucky.

Ernest married Martha Charlotte “Lottie” Armstrong on November 22, 1904 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  He was almost 20 years old and she was 21 years.  Martha was born on April 9, 1883 in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, the daughter of Samuel Robert Armstrong and Charlotte Ann Morgan.

Ernest and Martha had nine children:

After their marriage, the couple settled in a home next to Ernest’s parents in Woods, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  Ernest was working as a house carpenter in 1910.

By 1920, Ernest and Martha had moved their family into a home on Mount Holly Road in Woods, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  The house was near the home of Martha’s parents, as well as the home of her married brother, Walter, and his family.

Ernest and Martha separated sometime between 1922 and 1930. 

In 1930, Martha and her children were living in a home on Second Street in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  That census lists her as divorced.  However, in the Louisville, Kentucky City Directories for 1927, 1932, and 1951, she is listed as the widow of Ernest V. Farmer.

Ernest Vale Farmer died on July 15, 1958 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  He was buried in the Mount Holly Cemetery in Fairdale, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  Ernest was 74 years old at his death.

Martha Charlotte Armstrong Farmer died on August 17, 1965 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  She was buried in the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.  Her grave is near that of her son, Robert.  Martha was 82 years old at her death.

Samuel Robert Armstrong (1849-1935)

Samuel Robert Armstrong was born on January 24, 1849 in Louisville, Jefferson County Kentucky.  He was the son of John Armstrong and Mary Anne Sheridan.

Samuel married Charlotte Ann Morgan on December 20, 1876 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  Both were 28 years old at their marriage.  Charlotte was born on September 5, 1849 in Woods, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  She was the daughter of Elias Graham Morgan and Martha Jane Williams.

Samuel and Charlotte were the parents of nine children:

After their marriage, Samuel and Charlotte settled on a farm in Woods, Jefferson County, Kentucky, where they stayed and raised their children.  Samuel worked as a school teacher until he retired sometime between 1920 and 1930. 

The Armstrong family endured several tragedies as they raised their family.  They had nine children, but only four lived to adulthood.

Charlotte Ann Morgan Armstrong died on July 20, 1921 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  The cause of death was attributed to “acute indigestion.”  She was buried in the Mount Holly Cemetery in Fairdale, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  Charlotte was 71 years old at her death.

After the death of his wife, Samuel moved in with his son, Walter, and his wife and daughter.  Also living in the household was Samuel’s daughter, Fannie.

Samuel Robert Armstrong died in Jefferson County, Kentucky on December 26, 1935.  He had suffered from “cancer of the neck” for nine months preceding his death.  Samuel was buried next to his wife in the Mount Holly Cemetery in Fairdale, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  He was 86 years old at his death.

Edmond Dargan Boggess (1859-1938)

Edmond Dargan Boggess

Edmond Dargan Boggess was born September 29, 1859 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was the seventh of eleven children born to Lemuel Boggess, Jr. and Frances D. Adkins.  He and the other children were raised working on the family farm in Muhlenberg County. 
           
Edmond married Sarah Agnes Terrill on July 25, 1894 in Henderson County, Kentucky.  He was 36 years old and she was 22 years.  Sarah was born in May 1873 in Kentucky, the daughter Jackson Morton Terrill and Miriam Leavell.  

Edmond and Sarah had at least seven children:

            John Wesley              born June 1895
            Hayden B.                 born February 1897
            Marianne F.              born April 1898
            James Morton            born November 26, 1900
            Eva Grace                 born February 7, 1905
            Edmund D. Jr.          born 1906
            Walter B.                    born 1911

Sarah must have died between 1911 and 1916, as Edmond remarried in 1917. 

Edmond married Mary Elizabeth Sheridan Armstrong on December 28, 1916 in Sacremento, McLean County, Kentucky.  This was Mary’s first marriage.  She was 36 years old at that time, and Edmond was 58 years.  Mary was born on August 24, 1880 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, the daughter of Samuel Robert Armstrong and Charlotte Ann Morgan.

Edmond and Mary had at least one child together:

            Rachel A.                  born 1919

As a result of Edmond’s career as a clergyman, he and his family relocated several times.  In 1900, Edmond and Sarah were living in Driskill, Livingston County, Kentucky.  Edmond’s widowed mother, and his elder sister, Martha, were living in his household at that time.  1910 found Edmond and his family in Morganfield, Union County, Kentucky.  Then by 1920, they had moved to Sacremento, McLean County, Kentucky.  Finally, Edmond returned to his nativity and had settled on a farm in Muhlenberg County by 1930.

Edmond Dargan Boggess died on June 11, 1938 in the county of his birth.  He died in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky at the age of 78 years.  He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

After the death of her husband, Mary and her daughter, Rachel, went to live with Mary’s sister, Fannie Armstrong.  Her home was on New Cut Road in Jefferson County, Kentucky. 

Mary Elizabeth Sheridan Armstrong Boggess died on May 10, 1967 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  She was 86 years old at her death.
