Walter Morgan Armstrong (1878-1939)

Walter Morgan Armstrong was born on January 24, 1878 in Jefferson County Kentucky.  Born on his father’s birthday, he was the son of Samuel Robert Armstrong and Charlotte Ann  Morgan.  Walter was raised on the family farm in Jefferson County.

On October 2, 1907, Walter married Bertha Ann Crandall in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  He was 29 years old and she was 22 years.  Bertha was born in 1885 in Indiana, the daughter of Mannsel W. Crandall and Ann Jordan. 

Walter and Bertha had one child:

Virginia Anne Armstrong    born August 7, 1908

In 1910, Walter and Bertha and their daughter were living with Walter’s parents on their farm in Albermarle, Jefferson County, Kentucky. 

Walter registered for the draft for the First World War on September 12, 1918 in Jefferson County.  He was described as of medium height and build, with brown eyes and dark hair.  Walter did not serve in the war.

In 1920, Walter and his family were living and working on a farm on Mount Holly Road in Woods, Jefferson County, Kentucky.

By 1930, Walter, Bertha, and Virginia were living on a farm on Third Street Road in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  At that time, Walter was working at a brick yard and Virginia was employed as a stenographer for a real estate company.  Also in Walter’s household were his father and his sister, Fannie.

Walter Morgan Armstrong died on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1939 in Coral Ridge, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  He was buried in the Mount Holly Cemetery.  Walter was 61 years old at his death. 

After the death of her husband, Bertha and her daughter, Virginia, moved to Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  They lived with her brother, Edward J. Crandall.

Bertha Ann Crandall Armstrong died on February 10, 1969 in Jefferson County, Kentucky at the age of 84 years.  She was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.

On October 16, 1969, Walter’s remains were moved to Cave Hill Cemetery and laid to rest next to his wife’s grave.

Virginia Anne Armstrong died on July 4, 1991 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky at the age of 82 years.  She was buried alongside her parents in Cave Hill Cemetery.
