Rev. George J. Bonds (1832-1869)

George J. Bonds was born in 1832 in Tennessee.  He was the son of Drewery Knight Bonds and Sarah Goodrich.  By 1837, George’s family had moved to Pope County, Arkansas, and he was raised there.

In 1850, George and his mother were living in Pope County, Arkansas.  They were listed in the household of his brother, Robert, and his wife and children.

George married Celia Herrin on August 24, 1851 in Pope County, Arkansas.  He was 19 years old and she was 21 years.  Celia was born around 1830 in Tennessee, the daughter of Beverly Herrin and Eleanor Logue.

George and Celia had eight children:

William Henry Bonds                      born November 15, 1852
Warren Bonds                                  born 1854
Thomas Knight Bonds                    born September 15, 1856
Sarah Frances Bonds                     born February 22, 1858
George Bonds                                  born April 1860
Mary E. "Mollie" Bonds                   born March 4, 1862
David Bonds                                     born 1864
Jack Bonds                                       born 1866

In 1860, George and Celia and their children were living in Dover, Pope County, Arkansas.  George was a clergyman at that time.

Reverend George J. Bonds served a short time in the Civil War.  On February 22, 1862, he enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry Regiment, at Dover, Arkansas.  Two months later, he was appointed as chaplain at Little Rock, Arkansas.  He was relieved of duty on May 25, 1862.  The following is a short summary of the 3rd Arkansas Regiment:

“This company was raised in Pope County, Arkansas, and enrolled in Confederate service on February 22, 1862, at Dover, Arkansas, as Co. E, Williamson’s Battalion Arkansas Infantry.  When Williamson’s battalion was broken up in May 1862, the company was transferred to the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry.  The company was disbanded on January 1, 1863, and its members distributed to Co. I, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, and Co. F, 1st Battalion Arkansas Cavalry.

Celia Herrin Bonds died in 1868 in Arkansas City, Arkansas County, Arkansas.  She was 38 years old at her death.

George remarried a year after the death of his wife.  He married Mary Ann Weimer on July 14, 1869 in Johnson County, Arkansas.  Mary Ann was a widow with four children, ages 5 to 11 years.  Tragically, George died just four months later.

Reverend George J. Bonds died on November 12, 1869 in Johnson County, Arkansas.  He was 37 years old at his death.

Birth:  Marriage record

Death:  There are many trees on Ancestry.com that list Celia’s death in 1863, while also listing the birth of her two youngest children in 1864 and 1866.  I am going to assume that since the two children do in fact exist, her death date is wrong.  I have listed 1868 as her death date, since it corresponds with the births of her children, and it makes sense that someone could have mistaken 1868 for 1863.

Mary Ann Eliza Towell (1836-1909)

Mary Ann Eliza Towell was born on September 8, 1836 in Dickson County, Tennessee.  She was the daughter of Samuel Towell and Nancy Leticia Adkins.  Mary Ann’s family moved to Johnson County, Arkansas around 1839.

Mary Ann married Dr. Adam Washington Weimer on November 19, 1856 in Johnson County, Arkansas.  She was 20 years old and he was 34 years.  Adam was born around 1822 in Pennsylvania.

Adam and Mary Ann were the parents of five children:

Margaret Mary Weimer                    born 1858
Susannah Weimer                          born February 1860
Washington S.N. Weimer               born 1861
Sarah Elizabeth Weimer                born March 22, 1863
William Gideon Weimer                  born January 6, 1864

Three of their five children lived to reach adulthood.  Susannah died in March 1860, at just one month old; and Washington died in 1875, at the age of 14 years.

After their marriage, Adam and Mary Ann settled their family in Perry, Johnson County, Arkansas, where Adam worked as a physician.

According to probate records in Johnson County, Arkansas, Dr. Adam Washington Weimer died on April 4, 1864 in Johnson County.  He was 42 years old at his death.  The following is a note about Adam:
“Adam W. Weimer, physician, born c. 1823 PA, died during Civil War near his home in Johnson Co., AR. (Certified on record by his wife and brother-in-law, though no death certificate or burial record exists.) He was (as the story goes) going to treat wounded soldiers and was accidentally shot as he approached. His son William G. Weimer said his father lived in Iowa before coming to Arkansas. The Iowa Weimers (Adam Wimer) fit this perfectly, and have a son Adam born 1832 in PA. However, that Adam appears to have gone to Oregon and lived well past 1864. I cannot connect this Dr. Adam W. Weimer to any family; perhaps another researcher will have something that does.

On July 14, 1869, Mary Ann married Reverend George J. Bonds in Johnson County, Arkansas.  George, a widower, was born around 1832 in Tennessee, the son of Drewery Knight Bonds and Sarah Goodrich.

George died just four months later, on November 12, 1869 in Johnson County, Arkansas.  He was 37 years old at his death.

In 1870, Mary Ann was living with her children in Perry, Johnson County, Arkansas.  Mary Ann’s personal estate was valued at $300.

Mary Ann remarried again to Charles Haise Boggess, on March 30, 1876, in Johnson County, Arkansas.  He was 53 years old at that time and she was 39 years old.  Charles, a widower, was born on September 10, 1822 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the son of Lemuel Boggess, Sr. and Rachel Oates

In 1880, Charles and Mary Ann were living and working on a farm in Illinois, Pope County, Arkansas.  Charles’ sons, Arthur and William, were living with them.  Mary Ann’s surviving children, Sarah and William Weimer, were living with their grandmother, Nancy Towell, in Pittsburg, Johnson County, Arkansas.

Charles and Mary Ann were living on a farm next to the family of Charles’ son, William and his family, in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas in 1900.  At that time, Charles’ profession was that of “Dry Foods and Gen. Merchant.”

Charles Haise Boggess died two months after his 83rd birthday.  He died on November 23, 1905, in Pope County, Arkansas.  He was buried in the Pisgah Cemetery in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.

Mary Ann died on August 18, 1909 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas. She was buried in the Lamar Cemetery in Lamar, Johnson County, Arkansas.  She was just a few weeks shy of 73 years at her death.

Dr. Frank Dale French (1874-1941)

Dr. Frank Dale French was born on September 20, 1874 in Preston, Jackson County, Iowa.  He was the son of Melvin J. French and Mary L. Wyatt.  Frank was raised in Van Buren, Jackson County, Iowa.

In 1900, Frank and his widowed mother were living on North Olive Street in Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa.  Frank was working as a dry goods salesman at that time.

Frank married Marie Frances Henry around 1901, probably in Jackson County, Iowa.  He was 26 years old and she was 29 years.  Marie was born on November 27, 1871 in DeWitt, Clinton County, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Wilson Henry and Amorilla Spencer Sanger.

Frank and Marie had one child:

Genevieve H. French          born in 1903

Genevieve was born around 1903 in New York State.  In the 1920 US Census, Genevieve’s parents are listed as being born in France; however, Frank and Marie were listed as having been born in Iowa.  I wonder if she was adopted, as she was not listed in the 1910 US Census in the household of Frank French.

In 1910, Frank and Marie were living in Grand River, Cass County, Missouri.  Frank’s brother, Wilton, and his family were living nearby.  Both Frank and Wilton were partners in a dental office.

Frank registered for the draft for the First World War on September 12, 1918 in Harrisonville, Cass County, Missouri.  He was described as of medium height and build, with blue eyes and light brown hair.  Frank did not serve in the war.

In 1930, Frank and Marie were living in a home on Westport Avenue in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, where Frank continued his dental practice.

Marie Frances Henry French died on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1934 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.  She was laid to rest in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa.  Marie was 63 years old at her death.

In 1940, Frank was living with his nephew, Melvin French, and his family on Pennsylvania Street in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.  Melvin was the son of Frank’s brother, Wilton.

Dr. Frank Dale French died on October 20, 1941 in the Kansas City General Hospital in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.  He died from internal bleeding, as a result from an accidental fall in his home.  Frank was buried in the Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville, Cass County, Missouri.  He was 67 years old at his death.
