Mary Ann Eliza Towell was born on September 8, 1836 in Dickson
County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Samuel Towell and Nancy
Leticia Adkins. Mary Ann’s family moved
to Johnson County, Arkansas around 1839.
Mary Ann married Dr. Adam Washington Weimer on November 19, 1856 in
Johnson County, Arkansas. She was 20
years old and he was 34 years. Adam was
born around 1822 in Pennsylvania.
Adam and Mary Ann were the parents of five children:
Margaret Mary Weimer born
1858
Susannah Weimer born
February 1860
Washington S.N. Weimer born
1861
Sarah Elizabeth Weimer born
March 22, 1863
William Gideon Weimer born
January 6, 1864
Three of their five children lived to reach adulthood. Susannah died in March 1860, at just one
month old; and Washington died in 1875, at the age of 14 years.
After their marriage, Adam and Mary Ann settled their family in
Perry, Johnson County, Arkansas, where Adam worked as a physician.
According to probate records in Johnson County, Arkansas, Dr. Adam Washington
Weimer died on April 4, 1864 in Johnson County.
He was 42 years old at his death.
The following is a note about Adam:
“Adam W. Weimer, physician, born c. 1823 PA, died during
Civil War near his home in Johnson Co., AR. (Certified on record by his wife
and brother-in-law, though no death certificate or burial record exists.) He
was (as the story goes) going to treat wounded soldiers and was accidentally
shot as he approached. His son William G. Weimer said his father lived in Iowa
before coming to Arkansas. The Iowa Weimers (Adam Wimer) fit this perfectly,
and have a son Adam born 1832 in PA. However, that Adam appears to have gone to
Oregon and lived well past 1864. I cannot connect this Dr. Adam W. Weimer to any
family; perhaps another researcher will have something that does.”
On July 14, 1869, Mary Ann married Reverend George J. Bonds in
Johnson County, Arkansas. George, a
widower, was born around 1832 in Tennessee, the son of Drewery Knight Bonds and
Sarah Goodrich.
George died just four months later, on November 12, 1869 in
Johnson County, Arkansas. He was 37
years old at his death.
In 1870, Mary Ann was living with her children in Perry, Johnson
County, Arkansas. Mary Ann’s personal
estate was valued at $300.
Mary Ann remarried again to Charles Haise Boggess, on March 30,
1876, in Johnson County, Arkansas. He was 53 years old at that time and
she was 39 years old. Charles, a widower, was born on September 10, 1822
in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the son of Lemuel Boggess, Sr. and Rachel Oates.
In 1880, Charles and Mary Ann were living and working on a farm
in Illinois, Pope County, Arkansas.
Charles’ sons, Arthur and William, were living with them. Mary Ann’s surviving children, Sarah and
William Weimer, were living with their grandmother, Nancy Towell, in Pittsburg,
Johnson County, Arkansas.
Charles and Mary Ann were living on a farm next to the family of
Charles’ son, William and his family, in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas in
1900. At that time, Charles’ profession
was that of “Dry Foods and Gen. Merchant.”
Charles Haise Boggess died two months after his 83rd birthday. He died on November
23, 1905, in Pope County, Arkansas. He was buried in the Pisgah Cemetery
in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.
Mary Ann died on August 18, 1909 in Pottsville, Pope County,
Arkansas. She was buried in the Lamar Cemetery in Lamar, Johnson County,
Arkansas. She was just a few weeks shy
of 73 years at her death.
