Catherine Hobbs (1894-1935)

Daughter of John Thomas Hobbs & Rachel Ann Herndon



Catherine Hobbs was born in March 25, 1894 in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  She was the fourth of five children born to John Thomas Hobbs and Rachel Ann Herndon.  She was raised on the family farm in Chaplin, Nelson, Kentucky.

Catherine married John “William” Burgan on August 23, 1919 in Spencer County. Kentucky.  She was 25 years old and he was 23 years.  John was born on February 6, 1897 in Spencer County, Kentucky, the son of Thomas H. Burgan and Margaret Lee Lawrence. 

Just a year before his marriage, William registered for the draft for World War I on June 5, 1918 in Taylorsville, Spencer, Kentucky.  He was a man of medium height and build, with blue eyes and black hair.

After their marriage, William and Catherine made their home in Bloomfield, Nelson County, Kentucky, where William was employed as a farmer.  The couple had at least one child:

            Ray                  born 1914

John William Burgan died on October 6, 1922 in Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky.  The cause of death listed was a pulmonary embolism.  He was just 26 years old at his death. 

By 1930, Catherine had married Grover C. Gaddie, a widower with five children.  At that time, the couple was living on a farm in Taylorsville, Spencer County, Kentucky. 

Grover was born on June 14, 1885 in Kentucky, the son of William Jesse Gaddie and Louisa Leak.  Grover’s first wife, Nancie Belle Whitaker, died on May 17, 1922 in Taylorsville, Spencer, Kentucky.  The cause of death listed was septicemia, or blood poisoning.  The children of Grover and Nancie were:

            Lucille             born 1916
            J.B.                  born 1919
            William            born 1922

Catherine Hobbs Burgan Gaddie died on August 26, 1935 in Taylorsville, Spencer, Kentucky at the age of 41.  The cause of death listed was typhoid fever.  Grover went on to live another 43 years after Catherine’s death.

Grover C. Gaddie died on June 12, 1978 in Fisherville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  He was 92 years old at his death.
