Othur Utley Slaton (1896-1995)

Othur Utley Slaton

Othur Utley Slaton was born on March 22, 1896 in the city of Kitchen, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was the youngest of two children born to Charles Edmond Slaton and Halcyn Utley.

On June 5, 1917, Otho registered for the draft for World War I, with his brother, Fulton.  They registered in Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico.  He was living on Route A in Clovis, New Mexico.  Like his brother, he also worked as a machinist for the U.P. & S.Fr. R.R. (Union Pacific  & San Francisco Rail Road).  Otho was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.  He claimed no exemption from the draft, as he was single and had no dependants.

In 1920, Otho was living with his brother, Fulton, and his family in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.  There, Otho continued his employment for the railroad.  In 1930, Otho was living with his mother in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California.  His mother was a widow at that time having lost her husband within the previous year.  Otho was a policeman for the city of Long Beach, California.  He must have seen service in World War I as he is listed as a veteran of that war.

Othur Utley Slaton died on August 15, 1995 in Rancho Mirage, Riverside, California.  He was 99 years old at his death.
