Halcyon Utley (1865-1961)

Halcyon Utley

Daughter of William Obediah Utley & Cynthia Ann Wickliffe

Halcyon Utley was born July 3, 1865 in Seminary, Hopkins, Kentucky.    She was the eldest of five children born to William Obediah Utley and Cynthia Ann Wickliffe.  She was raised on the family farm in Seminary, Hopkins County, Kentucky.

Halsie married Charles Edmond Slaton on January 1, 1890 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  She was 24 years old and he was 26 years.  Charles was born in Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky on February 24, 1863.  He was the son of Arthur Walker Slaton and Mary O’Bryan.  Charles and Halsie were the parents of two children:

            Fulton Edmond        born on December 16, 1894

            Othur Utley                born on March 22, 1896

After their marriage, Charles and Halsie and their children lived and worked on a farm in Hopkins County, Kentucky until they relocated to New Mexico between 1900 and 1910.  They farmed in Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico, until their move to California sometime in the 1920’s.    

Charles Edmond Slaton died just before the 1930 US Census, as Halsie was listed as a widow then.  He was about 70 years old at his death.  Halsie went on to live another 31 years after her husband’s death.  She died in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California in July 1961, at the age of 95.  Halsie Utley Slaton is buried in Angels Abbey, Compton County, California.
