Fulton Edmond Slaton (1894-1928)

Fulton Edmond Slaton


Fulton Edmond Slaton was born on December 16, 1894 in the city of Kitchen, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was the eldest of two children born to Charles Edmond Slaton and Halcyon Utley. 

Fulton married Gladys Beulah Shumate on October 17, 1914 in Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico.  Gladys was born September 21, 1898 in Oklahoma, the daughter of William Howell Shumate and Jenna Mae Hood.  Fulton and Gladys had two sons:

                        Donald Edmond Slaton       born October 18, 1918
                        Thomas Howell Slaton         born January 6, 1921

Fulton registered for the draft for World War I, with his brother, Othur.  They registered on June 5, 1917 in Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico.  At that time, Fulton and Gladys were living at 210 N. Merriweather in Clovis.  He was employed as a machinist for the U.P.S.F.R.R. (Union Pacific San Francisco Rail Road).  Fulton was tall and slender with blue eyes and brown hair.  He claimed exemption from the draft as he was married and providing for his wife.

By 1920, Fulton and Gladys had moved to Barstow, San Bernardino County, California, where Fulton continued his employment as a machinist for the Railroad.

Fulton Edmond Slaton died on June 13, 1928 in California.  He was 35 years old at his death. 

In the 1930 US Census, Gladys’ children were listed in the household of Earl LesterBaxter.  Earl, who was divorced from his first wife, was living in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.

Gladys Slaton is listed in the California Voter Registrations through 1942.  She was employed as a clerk and lived at 115 South 1st Street in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.

Gladys had married Joseph Patrick McCue in 1942 in San Bernardino County, California.  This was Joseph’s second marriage as well.  John was born on November 24, 1893 in San Bernardino County, California, the son of James T. McCue and Mary Stack. 

According to the California Voter Registrations, the couple was living at 1625 Front Street in San Bernardino County, California, at least until 1946.

Joseph Patrick McCue died on September 24, 1964 in San Bernardino County, California.  He was 70 years old at his death.

Gladys Beulah Shumate Slaton McCue died on March 29, 1984 in San Bernardino County, California.  She was 85 years old at her death.
