Edith Mariam Wray (1897-1973)


Edith Mariam Wray was born September 26, 1897 in Saline County, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of Joseph A. H. Wray and Elizabeth “Bessie” M. Torry.  She was raised on the family farm in Beaver, Saline County, Arkansas.

Edith married James “Dickson” Stiles on November 20, 1920 in Garland County, Arkansas.  She was 24 years old and he was 25 years.  Dickson was born on December 8, 1894 in Pulaski County, Arkansas, the son of James D. Stiles and Ida E. Fairmon.

Dickson registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917 in Pulaski County.  At that time, he was living in Little Rock and employed as a miner for the American Bauxite Company.  He was described as of medium height and build, with brown eyes and hair.  Dickson served in the war.

After their marriage, Dickson and Edith made their home in Eastman, Pulaski County, Arkansas, where Dickson was employed as a foreman in a tie plant.  They later moved to San Diego County, California, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

Dickson and Edith had at least two children:

            James Dickson, Jr.              born 1922
            Helen F.                                 born 1924

James Dickson Stiles died on October 2, 1943 in San Diego County, California.  He was 48 years old at his death.  Edith went on to live another 30 years after the death of her husband.

Edith Mariam Wray died on July 19, 1973 in San Diego County, California, at the age of 76 years.
