Sylvester Merryman Driskill (1866-1946)

**There has been some conflicting research done regarding Alice Boggess, William Crick, Sylvester F. Driskill, and Sylvester M. Driskill.  I have done my best to muddle through the records and my research notes can be found here.

Sylvester Merryman Driskill was born on September 6, 1866 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was the son of John Franklin “Frank” Driskill and Nancy Isabel Shemwell.  Sylvester was raised on the family farm in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.

Sylvester married Anna Bell “Annie” Mohon on January 3, 1895 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was 29 years old and she was 20 years.  Annie was born in April 1875 in Muhlenberg County, the daughter of John Marcus Mohon and Laura A. Mize.

Sylvester and Annie were the parents of five children:

Elgin L. Driskill                     born November 8, 1895
Mildred Floelle Driskill        born December 1899
Dudley Bennett Driskill       born August 28, 1902
Mary Genevieve Driskill      born July 4, 1907
One child born and died between 1900 and 1910

In 1900, Sylvester and Annie were renting a home in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Sylvester was working as a teamster at that time.

By 1910, Sylvester and Annie and their children were living and working on a farm in Court House, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.

The Driskill family was living on Chestnut Street in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky in 1920.  By that time, Sylvester had resumed his employment as a teamster.

Sylvester and Annie were renting a home on North Main Street in Greenville, Muhlenberg County in 1930.  Sylvester was working as a salesman in a flour mill at that time.  Their large household included their widowed daughter, Floelle Bennewitz, and her son, Joe; their married son, Bennett, and his wife, Mary; and two of Sylvester’s brothers, George and John.

Sylvester Merryman Driskill died on August 8, 1946, exactly one month before his 80th birthday.  He passed away in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.

Anna Bell Mohon Driskill died six years later on December 19, 1962 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Annie was 77 years old at her death.

Research notes for Alice Boggess, William Crick, Sylvester F. Driskill, and Sylvester M. Driskill

**To find a complete list of references, click on the name of the individual

Birth Date:  May 13, 1861, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky
Alice’s date and location of her birth is listed on her birth record and her death record

Parents:  Lemuel Boggess, Jr & Frances D. Adkins
Alice’s parents are listed both on her birth record and on her death record.  This information is also confirmed by census records.

Marriage:  January 12, 1880 to Sylvester Franklin Driskill
The actual marriage date was found on several family trees on Ancestry.com.  Some listed Sylvester M. as the spouse, and others had Sylvester F.  None had a source listed for the marriage date; however the date corresponds with the marriage information listed in the 1900 US Census.

Children:  Sylvester and Alice were the parents of eight children, one having been born and died between 1890 and 1900.  This is confirmed in the 1900 and 1910 US Census records.

Death:  March 11, 1939, Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky
Alice’s death record provides reference of her marriage to Sylvester as well as her parents.  It also lists Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky as her final resting place, which suggests that she was most likely buried next to her husband in the Evergreen Cemetary.

Birth:  February 4, 1859, Todd County, Kentucky
Sylvester’s birth date and location is listed on his birth record and his death record

Parents:  Ferny G. Driskill & Ann E. Mayfield
Sylvester’s parents are listed both on his birth record and on his death record.  This information is also confirmed by census records.  Sylvester F.'s father and Sylvester M.'s father were brothers, which might account for the general confusion of the families.

Marriage:  January 12, 1880 to Alice Adelaide Boggess
The actual marriage date was found on several family trees on Ancestry.com.  None had a source listed for the marriage date; however the date corresponds with the marriage information listed in the 1900 US Census.

Death:  April 13, 1933, Greenville, Muhlenerg County, Kentucky
Sylvester’s death record provides reference to his birth and parents.  He is also listed in the Find A Grave Index.  He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

Birth:  September 6, 1866, Tennessee or Muhlenberg County, Kentucky
Sylvester’s death certificate cites Tennessee as his birth location; however the 1870 US Census records his family living in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, with Kentucky listed as the birth place for all of the children in the household.

Parents:  John Franklin “Frank” Driskill and Nancy Isabel Shemwell
Sylvester’s death certificate lists “J F Driskill” as his father and “Bell Shemwell” as his mother.  In the 1870 US Census, the parents of the household were J.F. Driskill and Nancy J. Driskill.  There is also a marriage record for J.F. Driskill and Nancy J. Shemwell on April 3, 1857 in Todd County, Kentucky.

Marriage:  January 3, 1895 to Anna Bell “Annie” Mohon
The marriage record for Sylvester and Annie provide the names of the bride and groom, as well as the date and place of the marriage.

Death:  August 8, 1946, Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky
Sylvester’s death record corresponds with the information on the Find A Grave Index and provides the information regarding the date and place of death, as well as the names of his parents.

Birth:  November 21, 1856, Rutherford County, Tennessee
The Find A Grave Index lists William’s birth date and the census records and death certificate support it.

Parents:  Marion Merriman Landrum Crick and Virginia Catherine Winsett
These names were found on several trees on Ancestry.com.  William’s death record, as well as the census records for 1860 and 1870, support this information.

Marriage:  January 13, 1881 to Martha Jane Boggess
This is where it gets confusing.  There are two almost identical marriage records for William listed on Ancestry.com.  The only difference is the name of the bride:

William did indeed marry Martha J. Boggess.  This information is supported by the Census records for 1900, 1910, and 1920.  Also, the death records of two of their children list William and Martha as their parents.  Why is Alice Boggess listed as the bride for William? I have no idea.  The image of the record was not available.  As mentioned above, Alice married Sylvester F. Driskill in 1880.

Death:  January 20, 1929, Court House, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky
William’s death date and place are listed in the Find A Grave Index, as well as on his death record.

Addison Turner (1885-1913)

Addison Turner was born on October 16, 1885 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was the first of four children born to Frances “Frank” Turner and Virginia Mary “Jennie” Boggess.

Addison was raised in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  In 1900, his family was living on a farm in Boggess, where his father worked as a farmer.

Addison married Alma Ruth Crunk in 1906 in Muhlenberg or Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was 20 years old and she was 17 years.  Ruth was born in October 1888 in Kentucky, the daughter of George T. Crunk and Elizabeth Crick.

Addison and Ruth were the parents of three children:

(Female) Turner                   born March 22, 1907, died before 1910
Lawson E Turner                 born December 18, 1908
Nevileen Turner                   born August 5, 1911

In 1910, Addison and Ruth were living with Addison’s parents in their home in Graham, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.   Addison and his father were working as coal miners at that time.

Addison Turner died as a result of pneumonia on May 21, 1913 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was buried in the Oglesby Cemetery in White Plains, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was 29 years old at his death.

Ruth remarried about three years after the death of her husband.  She married Silas Amos “Sam” Pope around 1916, probably in Kentucky.  Sam was born on October 6, 1895 in Arkansas, the son of James Robert Pope and Mary Burrow.

Sam registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917 in Wiley, Randolph County, Arkansas.  At that time, he and Ruth and her children were living in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, where Sam was employed as a farm laborer.  He was described as tall and slender, with blue eyes and light brown hair.  He did not serve in the war.

By 1920, Sam and Ruth and their family had moved to Curtail, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  Ruth’s brother, Lawrence Crunk, was also living with them.  Sam and Lawrence were both employed by the railroad.

Sam and Ruth moved their family to Michigan sometime before 1928.  They were living at 202 West Court in Flint, Genesse County, Michigan in 1928.  They stayed in Flint at least until 1931.  Sam was working in an Auto Body factory during that time.

Silas Amos Pope died on July 13, 1961 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was laid to rest in the Height Cemetery in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was 65 years old at his death.
