Avy Hall (1902-1992)

Avy Hall was born February 19, 1902 in McCulloch County, Texas.  She was the youngest of three children born to Joseph Hall and Mary Virginia Boggus.  She was raised in McCulloch County.

Avy married William Horace Sheppard on September 28, 1918 in Brady, McCulloch County, Texas.  She was 17 years old and he was 38 years.  This was William’s second marriage.

William Horace Sheppard was born October 18, 1880 in Williamson County, Texas, the son of Horace Franklin Sheppard and Mary A. Redding.  William married Margaret “Maggie” Neyland around 1905 in McCulloch County, Texas.  He was 27 years old and she was 19 years.  Margaret was born in June 1887 in McCulloch County, Texas, the daughter of Elbert Nathaniel Neyland and Mary Ann Heffernan.  William and Maggie had at least one child:

            William  Matthew         born September 9, 1906

Margaret Neyland Sheppard died on February 13, 1913 in Brady, McCulloch County, Texas.  She was 32 years old at her death.

Just two weeks before his marriage to Avy, William enlisted for the draft for the First World War on September 12, 1918.  He was described as tall and slender with brown eyes and light brown hair.  He also noted that he had three fingers on his right hand.  William did not serve in the war.

After their marriage, William and Avy made their home in Brady, McCulloch County, Texas.  William was employed as an engineer for an oil mill in 1920, and later became a fireman at the oil mill.  William and Avy had at least four children:

            Dorothy          born 1927
            Lucile             born 1929

William Horace Sheppard died on April 26, 1950 in Brady, McCulloch County, Texas.  The death certificate listed the cause of death as a “cerebral vascular accident” lasting one month.  He was 68 years old at his death, and is buried in the Brady Cemetery.

Avy Hall Sheppard went on to live another 42 years after the death of her husband.  She died on April 5, 1992 in McCulloch County, Texas.  She was 90 years old at her death.
