In June 1860, N. B. and his daughter, Josephine, were living and working on a farm in Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky.  Also laboring on the farm were six slaves; three male and three female.

N. B. remarried on December 1, 1861 to Pauline Gregory.  They were married in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  Pauline was 16 years old, and this was her first marriage.  Pauline was born on August 11, 1845 in Union County, Kentucky, the daughter of Richard Gregory and Sarah F. Waggener.
