Jerome Bertram Jones (1826- )

Jerome Bertram “J.B.” Jones was born around 1826 in Virginia.  His parents might have been Thomas Jones and Ann Grace Gaines, but I have not been able to find a document to verify that information.

Jerome married Elizabeth Merritt around 1845 in either Virginia or Kentucky.  Elizabeth was born about 1827 in Virginia.  The only family member I have found for Elizabeth is her brother, William Merritt, who was living with her and her husband in 1850.  William was born in 1841 in Kentucky.

Jerome and Elizabeth were the parents of at least three children:

Anna Elizabeth Jones        born in 1846
Thomas Edward Jones       born in February 1850
George Jerome Jones         born July 23, 1852

Jerome and Elizabeth raised their family in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  Jerome provided for his family by working as a sawyer.

George Jerome Jones (1852-1920)

George Jerome Jones was born on July 23, 1852 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was the son of Jerome Bertram Jones and Elizabeth Merritt.

George married Melissa Emery on May 11, 1875 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was 23 years old and she was 21 years.  Melissa was born about 1854 in Illinois.  There is very little information about Melissa.  I have not found any, other than this marriage record.

George married Annie Jane Delvin in 1877 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was 25 years old and she was 15 years.  Annie was born on September 3, 1862 in Paducah, the daughter of Frank D. Delvin and Sarah J. Adams.

George and Annie were the parents of eleven children:

Gracie Lee Jones                 born December 18, 1882
Goldie Beach Jones                        born September 18, 1884
Frank Bertram Jones           born March 2, 1886
George Jones                       born January 1889
Clarence Jones                    born September 1889
Algernon Jones                   born October 1890
Sarah Elizabeth Jones       born February 18, 1892
Florance Jones                    born June 1894
Emily Lucie Jones               born April 4, 1895
Edward Jones                      born December 1898
Janie Ellen Jones                born November 5, 1900

After their marriage, George and Annie settled their family in a home in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  George worked as a blacksmith to provide for his family.

By 1900, George and his large family were living in a home on Broad Street in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  George and Annie stayed in that home to raise their family.

George Jerome Jones died on January 18, 1920 in his home in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah.  He was 67 years old at his death.

Annie Jane Delvin Jones died on May 14, 1945 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah.  She was 82 years old at her death.

James Rudy Willett (1889-1970)

James Rudy Willett was born on September 10, 1889 in Maxon Mill, McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was the son of Dennis Edward Willett and Alice Lulu Hill.  He was raised on the family farm in McCracken County.

Rudy married Anna Katherine “Annie” Tempel on October 26, 1910 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  They were both 21 years old.  Anna was born on February 14, 1889 in Fenton, Missouri, the daughter of Adam Tempel, Jr. and Anna K. Tempel.

Rudy and Annie had two children:

Frances Olivia Willett          born September 1, 1912
Temple Willett                       born December 5, 1915

After their marriage, Rudy and Annie settled on a farm in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  Rudy worked with his father and brothers, farming and running a mill.

Rudy registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was described as of medium height and build, with blue eyes and black hair.  Rudy claimed exemption from the draft due to his needing to provide for his wife and children.  He did not serve in the war.

By 1930, Rudy and Annie had moved their family to a home on Washington Street in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.  There, Rudy worked at a bakery.

Anna Katherine Tempel Willett died on November 1, 1931 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.  She took her own life, after a long and difficult struggle with depression.  Anna was buried near her parents in the Maplelawn Park Cemetery in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  She was 42 years old at her death.

Rudy married again around 1935 to Emily Lucie Jones Walker, also a widow.  Emily was born on April 4, 1895 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky, the daughter of George Jerome Jones and Annie Jane Delvin.  Emily’s first husband, James William Walker, died in 1934.

In 1940, Rudy and Emily were living in a home in Hillsboro, Florida, where Rudy was working as a supervisor for a retail bakery.

James Rudy Willett died on July 8, 1970 in Polk County, Florida.  He was buried in Lakeland Memorial Gardens in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida.  He was 80 years old at his death.

Emily Lucie Jones Walker Willett died four years later, on March 7, 1974 in Polk County.  She was laid to rest next to her second husband in Lakeland Memorial Gardens in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida.  She was 78 years old at her death.

James William Walker (1891-1934)

James William “Willie” Walker was born on July 14, 1891 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was the son of William Walker and Elizabeth Seamon.  William Walker died in 1897, so James was raised by his mother on the family farm in Paducah.

James married Emily Lucie Jones in 1913 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was 22 years old and she was 18 years.  Emily was born on April 4, 1895 in Paducah, the daughter of George Jerome Jones and Annie Jane Delvin

James and Emily were the parents of two daughters:

Emily Lucille Walker                        born September 3, 1914
Jean Elizabeth Walker        born January 27, 1921

James registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  At that time, he was working as a machinist for the J.C. Railroad Shop in Paducah.  He was described as tall and slender, with grey eyes and light hair.  James claimed exemption from the draft because he was providing for his wife and child.  He did not serve in the war.

In 1920, James and his family were living with his widowed mother in her home on Broad Street in Paducah.

By 1930, James had moved his family and his mother to a home on Lovelaceville Paducah Road in Massac, McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was employed as a foreman for the railroad at that time.

James William Walker died on April 8, 1934 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  The cause of death was “fish poisoning.”  He was buried next to his parents in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah.  He was 42 years old at his death.

Emily married James Rudy Willett around 1935 in Tennessee.  Rudy was a widower, and this was his second marriage as well.  He was born on September 10, 1890 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky, the son of Dennis Edward Willett and Alice Lulu Hill.  His first wife, Anna Tempel, died in 1931.

In 1940, Rudy and Emily were living in a home in Hillsboro, Florida, where Rudy was working as a supervisor for a retail bakery.

William Walker (1844-1891)

William Walker was born on April 26, 1844 in Kentucky.  He was the son of William Walker, of New Hampshire or Massachusetts.

William married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Seamon on October 3, 1872 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was 28 years old and she was 18 years.  Elizabeth was born on August 20, 1854 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  Her parents were Henry Seamon and Catherine Henbing, both born in Germany.

William and Elizabeth were the parents of seven children:

Anna L. Walker                                born July 1873
Joseph Walker                                 born November 1875
John K. Walker                                 born March 1878
Frederick Courtney Walker            born March 23, 1881
Lena Walker                                     born July 1884
Lloyd Walker                                     born August 1888
James William Walker                     born July 14, 1891

After their marriage, William and Elizabeth settled their family on a farm in Clarks River, McCracken County, Kentucky.

William Walker died on February 12, 1891 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  He was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah, McCracken County.  He was 46 years old at his death.

In 1900, Elizabeth was living with all of her children in a home on Broad Street in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.

After her children had all grown, Elizabeth moved in with her son, James, and his family in their home on Lovelaceville Paducah Road in Massac, McCracken County, Kentucky.  She was living with them in 1930, and presumably stayed with them until her death.

Elizabeth Seamon Walker died on April 7, 1934 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  She was laid to rest next to her husband in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah, McCracken County.  She was 79 years old at her death.

Buried in the same lot as William and Elizabeth Walker, is another grave marked William H. Walker.  William H. was born in 1874 and died in 1876.

James Montgomery Bell vs. James M. Bell

I have found much research that has been done for these two gentlemen, and much of it overlaps.  Digging through the records, here is what I have discovered:

William Bell (b. 1740, Virginia) and Mary Foster (b. 1745, Virginia) had several children.  Among them, were two sons:

Judge William Bell, Sr., born in 1768, Virginia
Married about 1786 to Sarah Knight, born in 1768, Virginia
Son, James M. Bell, born in 1815, Kentucky
Married in 1845 to Mary Ann Elizabeth Hall, born 1825, Kentucky

Thomas Bell, born in 1773, Virginia
Married about 1799 to Hannah Boggess, born in 1781, Kentucky
Son, James Montgomery Bell, born in 1812, Kentucky
Married in 1835 to Nancy G. Boggess, born in 1814, Kentucky

Much of the research that has been done suggests that James Montgomery Bell and James M. Bell are the same person, having married Nancy G. Boggess first, and then Mary Ann Elizabeth Hall, ten years later.

That assumption is false.

James M. Bell and Mary Ann Elizabeth Hall appear in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 US Census records, all in McCracken County, Kentucky.

Meanwhile, James Montgomery Bell and Nancy G. Boggess are listed in the 1840 and 1850 US Census Records in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, and 1860 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.

The information listed in the 1850 and 1860 US Census Records proves that James M. Bell and James Montgomery Bell are not the same person.

James M. Bell (1815-1899)

Note:  click here for more information regarding the research of James M. Bell
