Arthur Haise Boggess (1861-1939)

Arthur Haise Boggess

Son of Charles Haise Boggess & Isabella C. Martin

Arthur Haise Boggess was born February 20, 1861 in Springfield, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was the fifth child born to Charles and Isabella Boggess.  In 1880, Arthur lived with his parents on a farm in Illinois Township in Pope County, Arkansas.  He worked with his father and brother on the farm. 

Arthur married Magnolia Elizabeth Oates in 1887, probably in Illinois, Pope County, Arkansas.  Arthur was 26 years old and Magnolia was 19.  Magnolia was born in March 1868 in Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas Oates and Melissa Grace Leslie McElwee. 

Arthur and Magnolia had eight children, five of which grew to adulthood.

In 1900, Arthur and Magnolia owned a farm in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  Arthur was a Dry Goods Merchant at that time.  By 1910, they had established themselves on a farm in Gala Creek Township in Pope County, where Arthur was a Retail Merchant at a General Store.  The family remained here at least until 1930.

           

Magnolia Elizabeth Oates Boggess died at the age of 66, on July 5, 1934 in Pope County, Arkansas.  Arthur passed away five years later on May 15, 1939, also in Pope County.  He was 78 years old.

Margaret Elizabeth Boggess was born October 8, 1854 in Arkansas, probably in either Jackson County or Conway County.  She was the fourth child born to Charles and Isabella Boggess. 

Margaret’s elder sister, Penicia, died on March 26, 1858, at the age of 12 years.  Margaret joined her sister in death four days later.   Margaret Elizabeth Boggess died on March 30, 1858; she was only three and a half years old.

Isabella Aileen Boggess was born on May 1, 1849 in Jackson County, Arkansas.  She was the third child born to Charles and Isabella and is presumably her mother’s namesake; however she was most often known by her middle name.  Aileen married Lewis T. Ragsdale on November 16, 1866 in Conway County, Arkansas.  She was 17 years old and he was one month shy of his 26^th birthday.  Lewis was born in December 1840 in Arkansas. 

In the 1910 census, Lewis and Aileen are listed as the parents of nine children, six of which were still living at that time.  All six were still living when Lewis died in 1918.  The nine children of Lewis and Aileen Ragsdale are as follows:

Lewis and Aileen and their children lived in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas in 1900 and on Pine Street in Russellville in 1910.  Lewis was a physician for many years and was well respected in the community.  He was also a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, as a 1^st Lieutenant in the 10^th Arkansas Infantry, Company K. 

Lewis T. Ragsdale died in his home on Sunday, June 16, 1918.  He was 69 years old at his death.  The following is a copy of his obituary:

PIONEER CITIZEN DEAD
Dr. L. T. Ragsdale, a pioneer citizen and large property holder in Russellville and Pope County, died at his home in this city Sunday morning after an illness of seven months, during most of the time he had been confined to his home. He had been slightly improved recently and had been able to come down town a few times, though due to his age, his family and friends had feared for some time that the end was near. Funeral services were conducted from the Central Presbyterian church Monday morning at 10 o’clock by the Rev. Wiley Lin Hurie, assisted by Rev. J. P. Snipes. The remains were laid to rest in Pisgah Cemetery near Pottsville, in the community where Mr. Ragsdale had practiced his profession for many years prior to moving to Russellville some eighteen years ago.

Dr. Ragsdale was a Confederate Veteran and was active in the reconstruction of this part of the country after the war. He had spent most of his life in this community and was widely known. He is survived by his aged wife and six children, all of whom live in Russellville and were present at the funeral except Robert A., who had but recently gone to Norfolk, Va., to enlist in the Marine corps. The other children are: E. H., Dr. Sid, postmaster Lewis Ragsdale, Wade, and Miss Allien.

To the bereaved family and many relatives we join a host of friends in extending condolence.

Aileen, widowed at the age of 69 years, went on to live almost 30 years after her husband’s death.  Isabella Aileen Boggess Ragsdale died on May 26, 1946 in Pope County, Arkansas.  She passed away twenty-five days after her 97^th birthday.

James Cicero Boggess (1848-1873)

James Cicero Boggess was born on July 31, 1848 in Tennessee.  He was the second child born to Charles Haise Boggess & Isabella C. Martin. 

James’ family moved from Weakley County, Tennessee to Union, Conway County, Arkansas sometime between 1850 and 1860. 

James married Alice Myrtle Smith on December 11, 1871 in Jackson County, Arkansas.  He was 24 years old and she was 19 years.  Alice was born on February 16, 1851 Philips County, Arkansas, the daughter of Jonas Dudley Smith and Viola Lawson Clendenning. 

James and Alice had one child:

James Cicero Boggess died four months after the birth of his daughter, leaving his young wife a widow at the age of 22, with an infant to care for.  James died on his 25^th birthday, January 31, 1873, in Conway County, Arkansas.

Penicia V. Boggess was born July 17, 1845 in Kentucky or Tennessee.  She was the first child born to Charles Boggess and Isabella Martin.  Penicia died four months before her thirteenth birthday, on March 26, 1858, in Arkansas.  Four days later, her younger sister, Margaret Elizabeth, died at the age of three.

Charles Haise Boggess (1822-1905)

Charles Haise Boggess was born on September 10, 1822 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was the first of six children born to Lemuel Boggess, Sr. & Rachel Oates.  His father died when Charles was about eleven years old, and his mother remarried three years later.  He grew up on the family farm in Muhlenberg, and eventually became the eldest of thirteen children.

Charles married Isabella C. Martin around 1844 in either Tennessee or Kentucky.  He was about 22 years old and she was about 18 years old.  Isabella was born on May 6, 1826 in Tennessee. 

Lists of the children of Charles and Isabella Boggess have been posted on several internet sites.  The following is a compilation of those lists, as supported by census records:

Only four of their seven children reached adulthood.  Their first child, Penicia, died four months before her thirteenth birthday, on March 26, 1858, in Arkansas.  Four days later, her younger sister, Margaret Elizabeth, died at the age of three.  They also lost an infant son, Richard, born in 1864, who lived only two months.

In 1850, Charles and Isabella and their children were living and working on a farm in Weakley County, Tennessee.

By 1860, the Boggess family had moved to Union, Conway County, Arkansas.  Charles was working as a merchant at that time, with his real estate valued at $2,500 and his personal estate at $600.

Isabella C. Martin Boggess died on her 49^th birthday, May 6, 1875, in Arkansas. She was laid to rest in the Springfield Cemetery in Springfield, Conway County, Arkansas.

Ten months after the death of his wife, Charles married Mrs. Mary Ann Eliza (Towell) Bonds, a widow, on March 30, 1876, in Johnson County, Arkansas.  He was 53 years old at that time and she was 39 years old.  Mary Ann was born on September 8, 1836 in Dickson County, Tennessee.  This was Mary Ann’s third marriage. 

In 1880, Charles and Mary Ann were living and working on a farm in Illinois, Pope County, Arkansas.  Charles’ sons, Arthur and William, were living with them.

Charles and Mary Ann were living on a farm next to the family of Charles’ son, William and his family, in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas in 1900.  At that time, Charles’ profession was that of “Dry Foods and Gen. Merchant.”

Charles Haise Boggess died two months after his 83^rd birthday.  He died on November 23, 1905, probably in Pope County, Arkansas.  He was buried in the Pisgah Cemetery in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.

Mary Ann died on August 18, 1909 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas. She was buried in the Lamar Cemetery in Lamar, Johnson County, Arkansas.  She was just a few weeks shy of 73 years at her death.
