Thomas Reed Torry (1894-1975)

Thomas Reed Torry was born October 22, 1894 in Grant County, Louisiana.  He was the son of Lycurgus Eugene Torry and Lucy Anna Williamson. He was raised in Grant County, Louisiana.

On June 5, 1917, Thomas registered for the draft for World War I in Grant County, Louisiana.  He was living with his mother at that time and working on the family farm in Grant County.  He was described as of medium height and build, with brown eyes and hair.  Thomas was a veteran of the war.

Thomas married Vera Ragsdale sometime around 1923, probably in Grant County, Louisiana.  He was 29 years old and she was 26 years.  Vera was born on August 4, 1894 in Texas.

This was Vera’s second marriage.  She married Henry Freeman about 1916 in Texas.  She and Henry had at least two children:

            Foy E. Freeman        born June 20, 1918
            Syble Freeman         born 1922

After their marriage, Thomas and Vera settled their family next door to his widowed mother, where he helped her with the farm labor.  They moved to Texas sometime later, where Thomas found employment as a building contractor.

Thomas Reed Torry died on December 1, 1975 in Odessa, Ector County, Texas.  He died of natural causes at the age of 81 years.

Vera Ragsdale Freeman Torry died three years later, on September 13, 1978 in Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas.  She was 84 years old at her death.
