Ida Florence Overton (1870-1947)

Ida Florence Overton was born on February 25, 1870 in Jasper County, Indiana.  She was the daughter of James Parker Overton and Charity Ellen Guinn.

Ida married Virgil Vaughan Nowels on December 21, 1890 in Jasper County, Indiana.  He was 19 years old and she was 20 years.  Virgil was born on March 16, 1871 in Jasper County, Indiana.  He was the son of John Wesley Nowels and Mercy Paine Hopkins. 

Virgil and Ida had five children:

In 1900, Virgil and Ida and their children were living in a home on Glover Avenue in Bloom, Cook County, Illinois.  Virgil was employed as a stationary engineer at that time.

Virgil and Ida moved their family to Colorado around 1905.  At that time, they were living at 1211 Beulah Avenue in Pueblo, Colorado, and Virgil was employed as an engineer.

By 1910, Virgil and Ida had divorced, and Ida was living with her children in a home on Palmer Avenue in Pueblo, Colorado.  Virgil was also living in Pueblo, and working as a machinist for a zinc smelter.

In 1930, Ida and her daughter were living in Newtown, Sullivan County, Missouri.  Her daughter, Ida May, was employed as a teacher at a public school.

Ida and her daughter were living in Makon County, Missouri in 1935, and had moved into a home on Locust Street in Boonville, Cooper County, Missouri by 1940.  Ida May was providing for herself and her mother by teaching at a high school.

In 1942, Ida was living at 514 E. Oak Avenue in Los Angeles, California.  She lived in California for the remainder of her life.

Ida Florence Overton Nowels died on December 5, 1947 in Los Angeles County, California.  She was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, Los Angeles County, California.  She was 77 years old at her death.

Virgil Vaughan Nowels (1871-1940)

Virgil Vaughan Nowels was born on March 16, 1871 in Jasper County, Indiana.  He was the son of John Wesley Nowels and Mercy Paine Hopkins.  He was raised on the family farm in Marion, Jasper County, Indiana.

Virgil married Ida Florence Overton on December 21, 1890 in Jasper County, Indiana.  He was 19 years old and she was 20 years.  Ida was born on February 25, 1870 in Jasper County, Indiana, the daughter of James Parker Overton and Charity Ellen Guinn.

Around 1912, Virgil married Pruella May Hollarbush Baxter.  Prucilla, a widow, was born on May 12, 1881 in Evansville, Rock County, Wisconsin.  She was the daughter of John Lewis Hollarbush and Mary Jane Eggleston.

Virgil and Pruella had five children:

In 1920, Virgil and Pruella and their family were renting a home in Hamilton, Caldwell County, Missouri, where Virgil was working in a coal mine.

By 1930, the family had moved to a house on 33^rd Street in Bakersfield, Kern County, California.  Virgil provided for his family by working odd jobs.

Virgil Vaughan Nowels died on August 16, 1940 in Kern County, California.  He was buried in Green Lawn Memorial Park in Bakersfield, Kern County, California.  He was 69 years old at his death.

Rites Set Monday for Virgil Nowels

Funeral services for Virgil Vaughn Nowels, 69, well known local resident of 924 Thirty-fourth street, who died late today in a local hospital, will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Hopson Mortuary chapel with the Reverend B.C. Barett officiating. Burial wil be in Greenlawn cemetery.

A native of Kouts, Ind., Mr. Nowels had lived in Bakersfield and Kern county for 21 years, during which time he engaged in the house moving business until 1930 when he retired from active business.

Pruella May Hollarbush Baxter Nowels died on August 21, 1958 in Kern County, California.  She was laid to rest next to her husband, Virgil, in Green Lawn Memorial Park in Bakersfield, Kern County, California.  She was 77 years old at her death.

Nowels, Pruella May--Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel at Greenlawn Mortuary, Monday, Aug. 25, at 1:30 p.m. for Pruella May Nowels, 77, 918 1/2 Woodrow Ave., Oildale, who died Aug. 21 in a Bakersfield hospital. The Rev. Harold W. Pollinger of the First Baptist Church will officiate and interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Nowels was a native of Wisconsin and had lived in Kern County 38 years. Survivors include four sons, Clyde Nowels, Oildale; Virgil Nowels, Ridgecrest; Herbert Nowels, Bakersfield; Earl Baxter, Barstow, one daughter, Edna Antonaros, Bakersfield; one brother, John Hollarbush, Huron, S.D.; 21 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Joseph Patrick McCue (1892-1964)

Joseph Patrick McCue was born on November 24, 1893 in Los Angeles County, California.  He was the son of James T. McCue and Mary Stack.  He was raised in Belleville, San Bernardino County, California.

Joseph registered for the draft for the First World War on June 2, 1917, in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.  At that time, he was single and working as a butcher for A.H. Pendleton in Barstow.  He was described as of medium height and stout build, with blue eyes and light brown hair.  Joseph was a veteran of that war.

Joseph married a woman named Ruby M. around 1918 in San Bernardino County, California.  Ruby was born about 1897 in Connecticut.

In 1920, Joseph and Ruby were living in a house on Bazabooth Street in Needles, San Bernardino County, California.  At that time, Joseph was working as a switchman for the railroad, as well as maintaining his employment as a butcher.

Joseph and Ruby are listed together in the California Voter Registration lists from 1920 through 1930. 

In 1930, Joseph was living with his brother, John, in Yermo, San Bernardino County, California.  He was listed as married, but Ruby was not listed in the household.  By 1932, Joseph was listed in the Voter Registration lists by himself, living in Yermo, San Bernardino County, California.

Joseph married GladysBeulah Shumate Slaton in 1942 in San Bernardino County, California.  This was Gladys’ second marriage as well.  Gladys was born on September 21, 1898 in Excelsior, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma.  She was the daughter of William Howell Shumate and Jenna Mae Hood.

According to the California Voter Registrations, the couple was living at 1625 Front Street in San Bernardino County, California, at least until 1946.

Joseph Patrick McCue died on September 24, 1964 in San Bernardino County, California.  He was 70 years old at his death.

Gladys Beulah Shumate Slaton McCue died on March 29, 1984 in San Bernardino County, California.  She was 85 years old at her death.

Earle Lester Baxter (1901-1981)

Earle Lester Baxter was born on December 10, 1901 in Beadle County, South Dakota.  He was the son of Eugene M. Baxter and Pruella May Hollarbush. 

In 1910, Eugene and his parents were renting a home on Colorado Street in Beadle County, South Dakota.  His father worked as a painter, and his mother was a dress maker.  From that census, we learn that his parents were married around 1900 and that he had a sibling born and die sometime between 1900 and 1910.

Earle’s father died between 1910 and 1913.  Around 1913, his mother remarried to Virgil Vaughan Nowels. 

In January 1920, Earle was living in Hamilton, Caldwell County, Missouri, with his mother and step father and family.  He was employed as a clerk at a dry goods store.

On June 28, 1920, Earle was hired on as a caller for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe – Coastline Railroad in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.  He was promoted to Yard Clerk on February 4, 1922, and then resigned from the railroad five months later, on July 10 with satisfactory service.  At that time, he was described as 5’10” tall, 130 lbs, brown hair, blue eyes, and a dark complexion.

Here is where things get tricky:

I found a marriage record for Earle Baxter and Elsie J. Baxter on July 16, 1929 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.  He was 27 years old and she was 29 years.  Elsie was born around 1900.

By 1930, Earle was divorced and living in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California, where he was employed as a building carpenter.  Living with him are two children, Donald Slaton (age 11) and Thomas Slaton (age 8), who are listed as his step sons.  The parents of the children are Fulton Edmond Slaton and Gladys Beulah Shumate.  Fulton died in 1928 and Gladys is nowhere to be found in the 1930 or 1940 US Census.  However, she is listed in several California Voter Lists throughout the 1930’s.  I cannot find a marriage record for Earle and Gladys, nor find any other reason the boys were living with Earle in 1930.  However, it is likely that Gladys met Earle through her husband, who also worked for the railroad. 

Earle married Violet O. Cleeton Kelly around 1937 in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.  This was the second marriage for both.  Violet was born on March 10, 1910 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, the daughter of John William Cleeton and Belle Elizabeth “Emily” Glidewell. 

In 1930, Earle and Violet were living on Cottage Street in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California, where Earle continued his employment as a carpenter.  Two children were listed in their household:

Patricia B. Kelly        born in 1931

Basil B. Baxter          born 1938

Earle Lester Baxter died one day after his 80^th birthday, December 11, 1981, in San Bernardino County, California.  He was buried in Mountain View Memorial Park in Barstow, San Bernardino County.

Viola O. Cleeson Kelly Baxter died on January 15, 1997 in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.  She was laid to rest next to her husband in Mountain View Memorial Park.  She was 86 years old at her death.

Gladys Beulah Shumate (1898-1984)

Gladys Beulah Shumate was born on September 21, 1898 in Excelsior, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma.  She was the daughter of William Howell Shumate and Jenna Mae Hood. 

Gladys’ family was living in Excelsior, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma in 1900.   By 1910, the family had moved to Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico

Gladys married Fulton Edmond Slaton on October 17, 1914 in Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico.  She was 16 years old and he was 19 years.  Edmond was born on December 16, 1894 in Kitchen, Hopkins County, Kentucky, the son of Charles Edmond Slaton and Halcyon Utley.

Fulton and Gladys had two children:

Donald Edmond Slaton            born October 18, 1918

Thomas Howell Slaton              born January 6, 1921

Fulton registered for the draft for World War I, along with his brother, Othur.  They registered on June 5, 1917 in Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico.  At that time, Fulton and Gladys were living at 210 N. Merriweather in Clovis.  He was employed as a machinist for the U.P.S.F.R.R. (Union Pacific San Francisco Rail Road).  Fulton was tall and slender with blue eyes and brown hair.  He claimed exemption from the draft as he was married and providing for his wife.

By 1920, Fulton and Gladys had moved to Barstow, San Bernardino County, California, where Fulton continued his employment as a machinist for the Railroad.

Fulton Edmond Slaton died on June 13, 1928 in California.  He was 35 years old at his death. 

In the 1930 US Census, Gladys’ children were listed in the household of Earl Lester Baxter.  Earl, who was divorced from his first wife, was living in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.

Gladys Slaton is listed in the California Voter Registrations through 1942.  She was employed as a clerk and lived at 115 South 1^st Street in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.

Gladys married Joseph Patrick McCue in 1942 in San Bernardino County, California.  This was Joseph’s second marriage as well.  John was born on November 24, 1893 in San Bernardino County, California, the son of James T. McCue and Mary Stack. 

According to the California Voter Registrations, the couple was living at 1625 Front Street in San Bernardino County, California, at least until 1946.

Laura Alice Barron (1878-1961)

Laura Alice Barron was born on May 17, 1878 in Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.  She was the daughter of Riley Eugene Barron and Alice Laurette Nugent.

Laura married James Peyton LaCroix on December 16, 1898 in Catahoula Parrish, Louisiana.  She was 20 years old and he was 27 years.  James was born on September 3, 1871 in Rapides Parrish, Louisiana, the son of Isaac LaCroix and Theodosia Ann Vance.

James and Laura had at least seven children:

After their marriage, the couple settled in a rented home in Catahoula Parrish, Louisiana, where James worked as a fireman.

By 1910, James and Laura had relocated to a farm in Grant Parrish, Louisiana.  Laura was listed as the mother of six children, with five still living.

In 1920, the family was living on Cemetery Street in Pineville, Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.

Sometime between 1920 and 1930, James, Laura, and their son, Alton, moved to Brawley, Imperial County, California.  While there, James was employed as a gardener for a school.

Laura was listed as next of kin for her brother, Henry Cornelius Barron, on his draft record for WWII in 1942.  At that time, she and James were living on Route 1 in Pineville, Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.

James Peyton LaCroix died on July 14, 1944 in Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.  He was buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Green Gables, Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.  He was 72 years old at his death.

Laura Alice Barron LaCroix died on June 4, 1961 in Louisiana.  She was buried alongside her husband in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Green Gables.  Also laid to rest in that cemetery are her mother, Alice Laurette Nugent Barron, and her grandmother, Amanda Antionette Sims Boggess.

Henry Cornelius "Neal" Barron (1879-1945)

Henry Cornelius “Neal” Barron was born on October 9, 1879 in Rapides Parrish, Louisiana. He was the son of Riley Eugene Barron and Alice Laurette Nugent. 

Henry married Alma J. Holland in August 1908 in Rapides County, Louisiana.  He was 28 years old and she was 19 years.  Alma was born in February 1888 in Lee County, Alabama, the daughter of John M. Holland and Emma Golden.

In 1910, Henry and Alma were renting a home on Montgomery Avenue in Winn Parrish, Louisiana.  Henry was working as a bookkeeper for the La Saw Mill Company.

Henry registered for the draft for the First World War on September 12, 1918 in Alexandria, Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.  He was described as tall and stout, with blue eyes and dark hair.  Henry did not serve in the war.

In 1920, the couple was living in a home in Spring Hill, Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.

Alma J. Holland Barron died on January 17, 1922 in Calcasieu Parrish, Louisiana.  She was just a few weeks shy of her 34^th birthday.

By 1930, Henry was listed as a boarder in a place on Third Street in Alexandria, Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.  He was employed as a laborer at a lumber mill at that time.

In 1942, Henry registered for the draft for World War II.  At that time, he was living in Gold Dust, Avoyelles Parrish, Louisiana.  He listed his sister, Mrs. J.P. Lacroix, of Pineville, Louisiana, as his next of kin.

Henry Cornelius Barron died on October 18, 1945.  He was buried in the Greenwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Pineville, Rapides Parrish, Louisiana.  He was 66 years old at his death.

Samuel C. Ayres, Jr. (1893-1987)

Samuel C. Ayres, Jr was born on January 3, 1893 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.  He was the son of Dr. Samuel C. Ayres, Sr. and Stella Hobbs. 

Like his father and grandfather before him, Samuel studied medicine.  In 1917, he was attending Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts. 

Samuel registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917, while attending school.  At that time, he was living at 170 Kent Street in Brookline, Massachusetts.  He was described as of medium height and slender build, with brown eyes and dark brown hair.  He claimed exemption from the draft as a medical student, but was ultimately enlisted.  He is a veteran of the First World War.

Two weeks after he enlisted in the draft, Samuel married Helen L. Lowry.  They were wed on June 14, 1917 in Jackson County, Missouri.  He was 24 years old and she was 23 years.  Helen was born on December 27, 1893 in Rockville, Bates County, Missouri, the daughter of George H. Lowry and Jessie G. Laughlin.

Samuel and Helen had two children:

In 1920, the couple were renting a place on Beacon Street in Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts while Samuel was finishing up his schooling.

By 1930, Samuel and his family were living in a home at 4657 Jarvis Avenue in La Crescenta, Los Angeles, California.  He was employed as a physician, specializing in dermatology. 

Samuel and Helen and their children relocated to a home in Glendale, Los Angeles, California by 1935.

Helen L. Lowry Ayres died just two months shy of her 90^th birthday.  She passed away on September 20, 1983 in La Cañada Flintridge, Los Angeles County, California. 

Samuel C. Ayres, Jr. died four years later on November 16, 1987 in the same place.  He was 94 years old at his death.
