Ernest
Heflin was born on August
26, 1874 in Graves County, Kentucky. He
was the son of Allen S. Heflin and Susan Taylor. Ernest’s parents separated not long after his
birth and in 1880, he and his mother were living with her father, Burrell
Jackson Taylor, in Graves County, Kentucky.
His father, Allen, married Ophelia Collier around 1875.
In 1910, Ernest was living in Shelby
County, Tennessee, where he found work repairing cars at a railroad yard. He was living his half-sister, Mrs. Daisy
Gammon, and her husband and children.
On September 12, 1915, Ernest
registered for the draft for the First World War. At that time, he was living on Scott Avenue
in Binghamton, Shelby County, Tennessee, and working as a laborer for the Nicky
Brothers. Ernest was described as of
medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair. Mrs. Daisy Gammon was listed as his nearest
living relative. Ernest did not serve in
the war.
Ernest was working as a machine
operator for Vamer Mill in 1920. He was
still living on Scott Avenue in Binghamton, with his sister, Mrs. Margarett
Caldwell, and her husband, Russell. They
lived next door to Daisy Gammon and her family.
Ernest married Ida M. Tiffin sometime
between 1920 and 1930. Ida was born in
1887 in Tennessee. Ida had one child
from a previous marriage
Ira Ensley Tiffin born September 1, 1915 in Arkansas
In 1930, Ernest and his wife and
stepson were renting a home on Carroll Avenue in Memphis, Shelby County,
Tennessee. Ernest was employed as a
machine operator in a lumber mill.
Ernest Heflin died on September 5,
1940 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.
He was buried in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky. He was 66 years old at his death.
