Samuel C. Ayres, Jr was
born on January 3, 1893 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. He was the son of Dr. Samuel C. Ayres, Sr. and Stella Hobbs.
Like
his father and grandfather before him, Samuel studied medicine. In 1917, he was attending Harvard Medical
School in Massachusetts.
Samuel
registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917, while attending
school. At that time, he was living at
170 Kent Street in Brookline, Massachusetts.
He was described as of medium height and slender build, with brown eyes
and dark brown hair. He claimed
exemption from the draft as a medical student, but was ultimately
enlisted. He is a veteran of the First
World War.
Two
weeks after he enlisted in the draft, Samuel married Helen L. Lowry. They were wed on June 14, 1917 in Jackson
County, Missouri. He was 24 years old and
she was 23 years. Helen was born on
December 27, 1893 in Rockville, Bates County, Missouri, the daughter of George
H. Lowry and Jessie G. Laughlin.

In
1920, the couple were renting a place on Beacon Street in Brookline, Norfolk,
Massachusetts while Samuel was finishing up his schooling.
By
1930, Samuel and his family were living in a home at 4657 Jarvis Avenue in La
Crescenta, Los Angeles, California. He
was employed as a physician, specializing in dermatology.
Samuel
and Helen and their children relocated to a home in Glendale, Los Angeles,
California by 1935.
Helen
L. Lowry Ayres died just two months shy of her 90th birthday. She passed away on September 20, 1983 in La Cañada
Flintridge, Los Angeles County, California.
Samuel
C. Ayres, Jr. died four years later on November 16, 1987 in the same
place. He was 94 years old at his death.
