Samuel M. Howell (1853-1937)

Samuel M. Howell was born on December 27, 1853 in Arkansas.  He was the son of Martia D. Higgins.  According to research done on Ancestry.com, Samuel’s father was Michael Howell.  I have not found any records to verify this research, although I did find Michael Howell in the 1850 US Census in Sulphur Spring, Montgomery County, Arkansas.  This Michael, a farmer, was born in North Carolina in 1788.  His wife was Mary, and their children were Melinda (13) and Martin (15).

In 1860, Samuel was listed in the household of Titus and Cinderella (Higgins) Pankey, in Bentley, Perry County, Arkansas.  I assume that Cinderella was some relation to Samuel’s mother; however I have not found a definite connection.  Samuel’s mother, Martia, and her husband, Thomas Brady, were listed in Martia’s mother’s household in Casa, Perry County, Arkansas in 1860.

Samuel was living with his mother and step-father and their children on a farm in Casa, Perry County, Arkansas in 1870.  Thomas Brady died sometime between 1870 and 1880, as Samuel’s mother was listed as a widow in the 1880 US Census.

Samuel married Alice A. Hanna on December 27, 1883 in Conway County, Arkansas.  He was 27 years old and she was 19 years.  Alice was born in 1864 in Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas, the daughter of William Samuel Hanna and Alice Myrtle Smith.

Samuel and Alice had one child:

Thomas W. Howell              born May 10, 1887

Alice died in 1887 in Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas.  She was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery in Morrilton.  She was 23 years old at her death. 

Seven years after the death of his first wife, Samuel married again.  He married Agnes Elizabeth “Bettie” (Bennett) Walker, also a widow, on November 1, 1894 in Conway County, Arkansas.  Bettie was born in September 1865 in Mississippi, the daughter of John Cooper Bennett and Sarah Ann Crow.

Bettie brought two children to the marriage:

Zula Zanzibar Walker           born March 13, 1891

Maude Walker                      born January 12, 1893

Samuel and Bettie were the parents of four children:

James Bryan Howell           born July 15, 1896

Wilma Clyde Howell            born 1898

Johnnie A. Howell               born October 10, 1899

Van Howell                           born July 29, 1901

By 1900, Samuel and Bettie settled their large family on a farm on Ada and Perry Road, in Higgins, Conway County, Arkansas.

Samuel and Bettie lost their youngest child, Van, on July 26, 1907.  He was laid to rest near Bettie’s first husband, Garland, and her firstborn child, Earnest, who both died in 1893.  Earnest was buried in Ada Valley Cemetery in Ada, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was just 6 years old at his death.

Samuel and Bettie were living on a farm in Lake, Perry County, Arkansas in 1920.  Also listed in their household were two of their children, Bryan and Johnnie, and three boarders.

Samuel M. Howell died on August 12, 1937 in Perry County, Arkansas.  He was buried in the Liberty Cemetery in Adona, Perry County, Arkansas. He was 83 years old at his death.

Agnes Elizabeth Bennett Walker Howell died on February 5, 1946 in Pulaski County, Arkansas.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Liberty Cemetery in Adona, Perry County, Arkansas.  She was 80 years old at her death.
