Mattie Bernice Wright (1901-1982)

Mattie Bernice Wright was born on June 10, 1901 in Petie Jean, Logan County, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of James E. Wright and Mary E. “Mollie” Bonds.  Bernice was raised on the family farm in Logan County, Arkansas.

Bernice married Edgar Loyd on June 30, 1917 in Logan County, Arkansas.  She was 18 years old and he was 25 years.  Edgar was born on March 22, 1892 in Magazine, Loyd County, Arkansas, the son of Alvin Columbus Loyd and Indiana Caroline Wann. 

Edgar registered for the draft for the First World War just a few weeks before his marriage to Bernice.  He registered on June 5, 1917 in Logan County, Arkansas. He was a farmer by trade, and caring for his widowed mother at the time.  He was described as tall and slender, with blue eyes and brown hair.  Edgar did not serve in the war.

Edgar and Bernice were the parents of three children:

Guy Voit Loyd                       born September 6, 1918

Landen L. Loyd                    born 1921

Robert James Loyd              born July 8, 1923

In 1920, Edgar and Bernice were living and working on a farm in Revilee, Logan County, Arkansas.  Edgar’s mother was living with them at that time.

By 1930, Edgar and Bernice had moved their family to a farm in Elk City, Beckham County, Arkansas. 

Edgar and Bernice relocated their family to a farm in Big Hill, Osage County, Oklahoma, sometime between 1930 and 1935.  They were living there with their children and Edgar’s mother in 1940.

Edgar registered for the draft for World War II on April 25, 1942.  At that time, he and his family were living in Burbank, Osage County, Oklahoma. 

Mattie Bernice Wright Loyd died in July 1982 in Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas.  She was buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Springdale.  She was 82 years old at her death.

Edgar Loyd died five years later, in April 1987 in Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas.  He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Friendship Cemetery in Springdale.  He was 95 years old at his death.
