Anna Elizabeth “Annie” Jones was born in November 1848
in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Jerome
Bertram Jones and Elizabeth Merritt. Annie was raised in Paducah.
Annie married Edward L. Chapman around 1866 in Paducah, McCracken
County, Kentucky. She was 18 years old and he was 29 years. Edward
was born on August 11, 1837 in Bath, Somerset, England.
Edward was a veteran of the Civil War. He fought for the Union in the 8th
Missouri Infantry, first as a private from July 2, 1861 to May 3, 1864; and
then as a captain in the 8th U.S.H. Artillery from May 21, 1864 to
February 12, 1866.
Edward and Annie were the parents of five children:
Laura A. Chapman
born
February 1867
General Lorenzo Chapman born April
10, 1868
Eugene Albert Chapman born 1869
Leo G.
Chapman
born November 16, 1871
Edward Lafayette Chapman born August 13, 1882
After their marriage, Edward and Annie settled in Paducah,
McCracken County, Kentucky. By 1868, the family had moved to Carthage,
Jasper County, Missouri, and they stayed there until around 1875.
In 1875, the Chapman family was living and working on a farm in
Buffalo, Barton County, Kansas. At that time, Edward’s property was
valued at $1,000 and his personal property valued at $50.
Edward and Annie lost a child, Eugene Albert Chapman, on August 13,
1877. Eugene was buried in Great Bend Cemetery in Great Bend, Barton
County, Kansas. He was 8 years old at his death.
In 1880, Edward and Annie and their children were living in Great
Bend, Barton County, Kansas. Edward was working as a Probate Judge at
that time.
By 1885, the Chapman family was living in Ellinwood, Barton
County, Kansas, where Edward was employed as a post master.
Edward L. Chapman died on June 13, 1894, in Great Bend, Barton
County, Kansas. He was laid to rest next to his son, Eugene, in the Great
Bend Cemetery. He was 56 years old at his death.
In 1900, Annie and her children, Laura and Edward, were living in
a house on Polk Avenue in Great Bend, Barton County, Kansas.
Around 1904, Annie married a Mr. Atwood in Great Bend, Barton
County, Kansas. He was not listed in the 1910 US Census with Annie, and
by 1920 she was a widow once again. Several trees on Ancestry.com list
Willis C. Atwood as her second husband, citing a reference in the 1880 US
Census, in which Willis is married to Ann E. Atwood. Obviously this
cannot be the same person who married Annie, as she was married to Edward in
1880 and listed in that census as his wife. Further research has
indicated that Willis C. Atwood is actually Willis Edward Atwood, born in Kentucky
in 1842 and died in Kentucky in 1921, married to Ann E. and also to Elizabeth
Frances Motley.
In 1920, Annie and her daughter, Laura, were living in a
home on Morton Street in Great Bend, Barton County, Kansas. Annie lived
the rest of her life in this house.
Anna Elizabeth Jones Chapman Atwood died on November 20, 1934 in
Great Bend, Barton County, Kansas. She was laid to rest next to her
husband in the Great Bend Cemetery. She was 86 years old at her death.
