William Joseph Ragsdale
William Joseph Ragsdale was born on May 8, 1895, probably in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas. Known by his middle name, Joe was the second of four children born to Albert and Lillas Ragsdale.
Joe registered for WWI on June 2, 1917. He was 22 years old when he enlisted. His registration card states that he was living in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas, and that he was a salesman for the Pierce Oil Corporation there in Russellville. He was most likely living with his parents at that time, in their home on Washington Street, as he was listed there in the 1920 Census. He was of medium height and build, with grey eyes and brown hair. He was not married at that time and had no dependents. In the 1930 Census, Joe is listed as a veteran of the World War.
Joe married Gussie Mathis on September 9, 1923 in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas. Gussie was born on October 11, 1900 in Arkansas, the daughter of Augustus G. Mathis and Bessie Gill.

William Joseph Ragsdale died in September of 1974 in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas. He was 79 years old at his death.
Gussie Ragsdale went on to live another ten years after her husband’s death. She died in December of 1984 in the same city, at the age of 84.
