Nettie Mae Murphy was born on April 22, 1897 in
Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky. She
was the eldest of three children born to Charles B. Murphy and Nellie MayMeyers. She was raised in Kenton County,
Kentucky, and Franklin County, Ohio.
Nettie’s
father died when she was a very young child.
Her mother remarried when Nettie was five years old, to a man named Charles
E. Crothers. After that, the family
relocated to Franklin County, Ohio.
Nettie
married Lawrence H. “Larry” Grunkemeyer on July 19, 1919 in Clark County,
Ohio. She was 22 years old and he was 25
years. Lawrence was born on October 16,
1893 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, the son of John Grunkemeyer and
Minnie Shearer. Larry and Nettie had one
child:
Nettie Jane born February 21, 1921
Larry registered
for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917 in Cincinnati, Hamilton
County, Ohio. At that time, he was
employed as a railway clerk. He was tall
and slender, with brown eyes and red hair.
Larry was a veteran of the war,
having served from April 25, 1918 until May 2, 1919.
In 1930, the
Grunkemeyers were living at 611 Lindon Street in Ludlow, Kenton County, Kentucky. Larry’s brother, Alphonse, was living with
them as well. By 1940, Larry, Nettie,
and their daughter had moved to 14306 Coyle Avenue, Detroit, Wayne County,
Michigan. Larry was employed as a clerk
in the freight department of NYC Depot.
Nettie Mae
Murphy Grunkemeyer died on March 18, 1982 in Troy, Oakland County, Michigan, at
the age of 84. Larry died one year
later.
Lawrence H.
Grunkemeyer died on June 24, 1983 in Troy, Oakland County, Michigan. He was 89 years old at his death.
