Edith Bryan Murphy (1899-1985)

Edith Bryan Murphy was born February 3, 1899 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.  She was the second of three children born to Charles B. Murphy and Nellie MayMeyers.  She was raised in Kenton County, Kentucky, and Franklin County, Ohio.

Edith married Thomas Columbus Butler between 1920 and 1929.  Thomas was born on May 6, 1892 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky, the son of Columbus Butler and Mary O’Brien.  Both of his parents were born in Ireland.

Thomas registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.  At that time, he was employed as a salesman for “Lovell & Buffington Tobacco Co.” in Covington.  He was of medium height and slender build, with brown hair and eyes.

Thomas Columbus Butler died on June 19, 1929 in Kenton County, Kentucky.  He was just 37 years old at his death.  The cause of death was “pulmonary tuberculosis.” He was buried at St. Mary’s on June 22, 1929.

After the death of her husband, Edith moved back in with her mother and step-father in their home at 3313 Emerson Avenue, Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.  In 1930, she was employed as a clerk for the railroad office, and then as a typist for a life insurance company in 1940.  Edith never remarried.

Edith Bryan Murphy Butler died on July 22, 1985 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.  She was 86 years old at her death.
