Laura Virginia Hanna (1867-1943)

Laura Virginia Hanna was born on January 26, 1867 in Conway County, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of William Samuel Hanna and Mary E. Morgan.  Laura lost her mother when she was still a child.  Her father remarried to Alice Myrtle Boggess, a widow, when Laura was ten years old.  Laura was raised in Hamilton, Conway County, Arkansas.

Laura married Robert T. “Bob” Gordon on November 4, 1886 in Conway County, Arkansas.  She was 19 years old and he was 23 years.  Bob was born in September 1860 in Washington, Conway County, Arkansas, the son of Green Gordon and Martha Webster.

After their marriage, Bob and Laura rented a home on South Main Street in Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas.  In 1900, Bob was providing for his family by working as a carpenter.

Bob and Laura were the parents of two children:

Mabel Gordon           born May 1889
Ruby M. Gordon       born April 1891

Robert T. Gordon died in 1900, leaving Laura a widow with two young children.  Bob died in Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas at the age of 40 years. 

Laura remarried the following year, to a widower named Charles W. Hershey.  They were married on June 30, 1901 in Conway County, Arkansas.  Charles was born on June 26, 1853 in Illinois, the son of Joseph M. Hershey and Catherine Liard.  Charles’ first marriage was to Laura Belle Swift on March 30, 1884 in Wabash County, Illinois.  Charles brought two children to the marriage.

In 1910, Charles and Laura were living and working on a farm on Damascus Road in Walker, Faulkner County, Arkansas.  Also listed in their household were their three unmarried daughters: Lena and Minnie Hershey, and Ruby Gordon.

Charles and Laura parted ways sometime after 1910.  In 1921, Laura was living in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.  She was listed as the widow of “Chas W” Hershey in the Dallas City Directories for the years 1921, 1922, 1924, 1929, 1931, 1932, and 1934.

In 1940, Laura was renting a home at 613 Crocket Street in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.  She was employed as a manager of a “Rooming Store.”

Laura Virginia Hanna Gordon Hershey died on December 15, 1943 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.  The cause of death listed was influenza and old age.  Laura was buried in the Restland Memorial Park in Dallas.  She was 76 years old at her death.

Johnnie A. Howell (1899-1986)

Johnnie A. Howell was born October 10, 1899 in Ada Valley, Conway County, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of Samuel M. Howell and Agnes Elizabeth Bennett Johnnie was raised on the family farm in Higgins, Conway County, Arkansas.

Johnnie married Elmer Odis Hamilton on July 6, 1921 in Prairie County, Arkansas.  She was 21 years old and he was 26 years.  Elmer was born on July 10, 1895 in Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas, the son of William Alexander Hamilton and Nancy Clarkie Johnson. 

Elmer was a veteran of the First World War.  He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 in Conway County, Arkansas.  At that time, he was living with his parents in their home in Morrilton, Conway County.  He was employed as a bookkeeper for the Morrilton Cotton Oil Company.  He was described as slender and of medium height, with brown eyes and dark hair.

After their marriage, Elmer and Johnnie made their home on Rumbough Street in De Valls Bluff, Prairie County, Arkansas.  Elmer worked as a Deputy Clerk for the circuit court.

Elmer and Johnnie were the parents of at least five children:

Nancy E. Hamilton              born 1926
Joan Hamilton                      born 1930
Mary Evylyn Hamilton         born 1934
Carolyn Hamilton                 born 1938

In 1940, Elmer and Johnnie and their children were living in White River, Prairie County, Arkansas.

Elmer Odis Hamilton died on February 26, 1975 in Prairie County, Arkansas.  He was buried in the Hazen Cemetery in Hazen, Prairie County, Arkansas.  He was 79 years old at his death.

Johnnie A. Howell Hamilton died December 12, 1986 in Prairie County, Arkansas.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Hazen Cemetery in Hazen, Prairie County, Arkansas.  She was 87 years old at her death.

Wilma Clyde Howell (1898-1953)

Wilma Clyde Howell was born in 1898 in Ada Valley, Conway County, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of Samuel M. Howell and Agnes Elizabeth Bennett Wilma was raised on the family farm in Higgins, Conway County, Arkansas.

Wilma married James Madison Hardin on June 3, 1919 in Perry County, Arkansas.  She was 21 years old and he was 37 years.  James was born on September 18, 1881 in Jamestown, Independence County, Arkansas, the son of Joseph John Hardin and Sarah Alice James.

Nine months before his marriage, James registered for the draft for the First World War on September 9, 1918 in Perry County, Arkansas.  He was described as of medium height and build, with gray eyes and light brown hair.

James and Wilma had two children:

Mary G. Hardin                     born 1920
Vonda Rose Hardin             born January 3, 1922

In 1920, James and Wilma were renting a house on East 15th Street in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.  James was working for a lumber company at that time.

By 1930, the family had moved to Coleman County, Texas.  There, James rented a home for his family and provided for them by working as a “wage hand” on a farm.

James and Wilma and their children moved back to Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas by 1935.  In 1940, they were living at 804 East 18th Street in Little Rock, where James was employed as a flooring grader for the E. L. Bruce Lumber Company.

James Madison Hardin died in 1953 and was buried in the Liberty Cemetery in Adona, Perry County, Arkansas.  He was 72 years old at his death.

Wilma Clyde Howell Hardin also died in 1953 and was laid to rest beside her husband in the Liberty Cemetery in Adona.  She was 55 years old at her death.

James Bryan Howell (1896-1948)

James Bryan Howell was born on July 15, 1896 in Ada Valley, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was the son of Samuel M. Howell and AgnesElizabeth Bennett.  James was raised on the family farm in Higgins, Conway County, Arkansas.

 James was a veteran of the First World War.  He registered for the draft on June 5, 1918 in Perry County, Arkansas.  He was described as short, of medium build, with gray eyes and light brown hair.

After the war, James returned home and lived with his parents in Lake, Perry County, Arkansas.  In the 1920 US Census, James’ occupation was that of a carpenter.

James married Belle Virginia (maiden name unknown) around 1925, probably in Arkansas.  He was 28 years old and she was 26 years.  Belle was born about 1899 in Alabama.

James and Belle were the parents of two children:

James Howell           born 1927
Virginia Howell         born 1930

After their marriage, James and Belle settled their family in a home on Division Street in North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, where James worked in a barber shop.  They stayed in that home at least until 1940.

Sometime between 1940 and 1942, the family moved into a home at 2420 Parker Street in North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.

James Bryan Howell died on November 19, 1948 in Pulaski County, Arkansas.  He was 52 years old at his death.

Maude Walker (1893-1991)

Maude Walker was born on January 12, 1893 in Ada Valley, Conway County, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of Garland Adison Walker and Agnes Elizabeth Bennett.  Maude’s father died the same year she was born.  Her mother remarried in 1894 to Samuel M. Howell, a widower.  Maude was raised on the family farm in Higgins, Conway County, Arkansas.

Maude married Eugene Arthur Ashcraft on September 16, 1910 in Conway County, Arkansas.  She was 18 years old and he was 21 years.  Eugene was born on November 4, 1889 in Conway County, Arkansas, the son of William Columbus Ashcraft and Nancy A. Puckett.

Eugene and Maude were the parents of two children:

Theo T. Ashcraft                   born 1912
Valeria A. Ashcraft               born 1916

Eugene registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917 in Conway County, Arkansas.  He was described as of medium height and build, with brown hair and brown eyes.  He did not serve in the war, as he was the sole provider for his wife and two small children.

Eugene and Maude settled their family in Casa, Perry County, Arkansas, where they lived and worked on a farm.  Sometime between 1920 and 1930, they moved their family to a house at 1607 Mc Almont Street in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.  Eugene was employed as a grader at the E.L. Bruce Lumber Company in Little Rock.

Eugene Arthur Ashcraft died on March 14, 1968 in Pulaski County, Arkansas.  He was buried in the Orion Cemetery in Sheridan, Grant County, Arkansas.  He was 78 years old at his death.

Maude Walker Ashcraft died 22 years later, on January 1, 1991 in Arkansas.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Orion Cemetery in Sheridan, Grant County, Arkansas.  She was 98 years old at her death.

Zula Zanzibar Walker (1891-1996)

Zula Zanzibar Walker was born on March 13, 1891 in Ada Valley, Conway County, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of Garland Adison Walker and Agnes Elizabeth Bennett.  Zula’s father died when she was just two years old.  Her mother remarried in 1894 to Samuel M. Howell, a widower.  Zula was raised on the family farm in Higgins, Conway County, Arkansas.

Zula married Daniel Leroy Deeter on October 28, 1910 in Conway County, Arkansas.  She was 19 years old and he was 24 years.  Daniel was born on December 14, 1885 in Arkansas, the son of Charles Palmer Deeter and Lydia Sibella Burkett.

Daniel and Zula were the parents of nine children:

Morton Lansing Deeter                   born 1916
Melba Deeter                                    born 1920
Virginia Deeter                                 born 1923

Daniel registered for the draft for the First World War on September 12, 1918 in Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas.  Daniel and Zula and their children were living in Morrilton at that time, where Daniel was working as a farmer.  He was described as of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.  Daniel did not serve in the war.

In 1920, Daniel and Zula and their family were living and working on a farm in Cedar Falls, Conway County, Arkansas.  The family remained in Cedar Falls until at least 1940. 

Daniel registered for the draft for World War II in 1942.  At that time, he and Zula were living in Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas. 

 Daniel Leroy Deeter died on December 17, 1979 in Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was buried in the Petit Jean Mountain Cemetery in Oppelo, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was 94 years old at his death.

Zula Zanzibar Walker Deeter died on January 26, 1996 in North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Petit Jean Mountain Cemetery in Oppelo, Conway County, Arkansas.  Zula died just a few weeks before her 106th birthday.

Agnes Elizabeth Bennett (1865-1946)

Agnes Elizabeth “Bettie” Bennett was born in September 1865 in Mississippi.  She was the daughter of John Cooper Bennett and Sarah Ann Crow.

Bettie married Garland Adison Walker on October 30, 1887 in Conway County, Arkansas.  She was 21 years old and he was 31 years.  Garland was born on November 14, 1855 in Arkansas. 

After their marriage, Garland and Bettie settled in Ada Valley, Conway County, Arkansas. 

Bettie and Garland had at least three children:

Earnest Walker                     born November 15, 1888
Zula Zanzibar Walker           born March 13, 1891
Maude Walker                      born January 12, 1893

Garland Adison Walker died on May 22, 1893 in Conway County, Arkansas.  He was buried in the Ada Valley Cemetery in Ada, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was 37 years old at his death.

Five months after the death of her husband, Bettie lost her eldest son.  Earnest died on October 22, 1893 in Conway County, Arkansas.  He was buried next to his father in the Ada Valley Cemetery in Ada, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was just a few weeks shy of his 5th birthday at his death.

Bettie remarried the following year.  She married Samuel M. Howell, a widower, on November 1, 1894 in Conway County, Arkansas.  Samuel was born on December 27, 1853 in Arkansas. 

Samuel brought one child to the marriage:

Thomas W. Howell              born May 10, 1887

Samuel and Bettie were the parents of four children:

James Bryan Howell           born July 15, 1896
Wilma Clyde Howell            born 1898
Johnnie A. Howell               born October 10, 1899
Van Howell                           born July 29, 1901

By 1900, Samuel and Bettie settled their large family on a farm on Ada and Perry Road, in Higgins, Conway County, Arkansas.

Samuel and Bettie lost their youngest child, Van, on July 26, 1907.  He was laid to rest near Bettie’s first husband, Garland, and her firstborn child, Earnest, who both died in 1893.  Earnest was buried in Ada Valley Cemetery in Ada, Conway County, Arkansas.  He was just 6 years old at his death.

Samuel and Bettie were living on a farm in Lake, Perry County, Arkansas in 1920.  Also listed in their household were two of their children, Bryan and Johnnie, and three boarders.

Samuel M. Howell died on August 12, 1937 in Perry County, Arkansas.  He was buried in the Liberty Cemetery in Adona, Perry County, Arkansas. He was 83 years old at his death.

Agnes Elizabeth Bennett Walker Howell died on February 5, 1946 in Pulaski County, Arkansas.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Liberty Cemetery in Adona, Perry County, Arkansas.  She was 80 years old at her death.
