Zilpha Ann Boggess (1824- )

Daughter of Lemuel Boggess, Sr. and Rachel Oates

 Zilpha Ann Boggess was born on November 9, 1824 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was the first daughter and the second of six children born to Lemuel and Rachel Boggess.  Her father died when Zelpha was about nine years old, and her mother remarried three years later.  She grew up on the family farm in Muhlenberg, and eventually became the second eldest of thirteen children.

There is very little information regarding Zilpha and her family.  Zilpha married Charles W. Murphy on March 10, 1840 in Muhlenberg, Kentucky.  She was 15 years old at that time.  There is no recorded birth date for Charles, but one can assume he was probably in his early twenties when he married Zilpha.

There are numerous sources confirming Zilpha’s date of birth, marriage to Charles, and her parentage, however, none of those sources attest to children born to Zilpha and Charles, or even hint at a death date.

In 1840, there were three heads of household by the name of Murphy in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  C.W. Murphy was between 20 and 30 years old with two males between 10 and 15 years, and one female between 15 and 20 years.  If the Census was taken after their marriage in March 1840, this could account for both Charles and Zilpha. 

Jesse Murphy, aged between 60 and 70 years, was the second head of household listed in Muhlenberg in the 1840 census.  Along with himself, his household included one female between 10 and 15 years, one male between 15 and 20 years, one female between 20 and 30 years, and one female between 50 and 60 years.  Jesse could possibly be the father of Charles W. Murphy.

The third Murphy head of household in Muhlenberg Kentucky in 1840 was Matthew Murphy, aged between 50 and 60 years.  The others in his household were two males and one female under five years, and one male and one female between 20 and 30 years.

Ben Charles Boggess (1899-1952)

Ben Charles Boggess was born on September 29, 1899 in Galla Creek, Pope County, Arkansas.  He was the youngest of four children born to William Clarence Boggess and Dora A. Reed.  Ben was raised on the family farm located on the Little Rock Fort Smith Highway in Galla Creek, Pope County, Arkansas.  The family farm was located near the farms of her grandparents, Charles and Isabella Boggess, and her Uncle Haise Boggess.

Ben registered for service for World War I, on September 12, 1918 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  He was self-employed as a farmer.  He was short and stout, with grey eyes and blond hair.

Ben married Bessie Lee Evans around 1923, probably in Atkins, Pope County, Arkansas.  He was 24 years old and she was 17 years.  Bessie was born on July 30, 1904 in Adkins, Arkansas, the daughter of Lonnie Lee Evans and Tennessee Lee McCullough.  

In 1930, Ben and Bessie lived in El Reno, Canadian County, Oklahoma, along with Ben’s widowed mother, Dora.  Ben worked for an Ice Company at that time. 

Ben Charles Boggess died at the age of 52 on January 6, 1952 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  Bessie went on to live another 35 years after the death of her husband.

Bessie Lee Evans Boggess died on November 22, 1987 in Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas.  She was  83 years old at her death.

Annie Jane Boggess (1895- )

Annie Jane Boggess was born in May 1895 in Galla Creek, Pope County, Arkansas.  She was the third of four children born to William Clarence Boggess and Dora A. Reed.  Annie was raised on the family farm located on the Little Rock Fort Smith Highway in Galla Creek, Pope County, Arkansas.  The family farm was located near the farms of her grandparents, Charles and Isabella Boggess, and her Uncle Haise Boggess.

Annie married Wade Bryan Henry on August 3, 1918 in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas.  She was 22 years old and he was 24.  Wade was born on April 11, 1893 in the same city.  He was the son of William Charles Henry and Elizabeth Henry.

Prior to his marriage to Annie, Wade enlisted for service for World War I on June 5, 1917 in Illinois, Arkansas.  He was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and light hair.

In 1930, Wade and Annie lived in Wilson, Pope County, Arkansas, where Wade was a farmer.  They had no children at that time.  In that census, Wade was listed as a veteran of World War I.  In 1942, Wade registered for the draft during World War II.  He and Annie were living in Atkins, Pope County Arkansas at that time.  Their telephone number was 74B.

Wade Bryan Henry died in September 1967 in Russellville.  He was 74 years old at his death.

Mamie B. Boggess (1890- )

Mamie B. Boggess

Mamie B. Boggess was born in July 1890 in Galla Creek Township, Pope County, Arkansas.  She was the second of four children born to William Clarence Boggess and Dora A. Reed.  Mamie was raised on the family farm located on the Little Rock Fort Smith Highway in Galla Creek, Pope County, Arkansas.  The family farm was located near the farms of her grandparents, Charles and Isabella Boggess, and her Uncle Haise Boggess.

In 1913, Mamie married Alexander Reece Henry.  She was 24 and he was 25 years old.  Reece was born on July 9, 1888 in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas, the son of Charles W. Henry and Bertha Lavina Houser.

On June 5, 1917, Reece registered for service in World War I with his brother-in-law, Earl S. Boggess.  He was a farmer at that time, living with his wife and child in Pottsville.  He was of medium height and build, with brown eyes and dark brown hair.

Reece and Mamie raised their family in Wilson, Pope County, Arkansas, where Reece was a farmer.  They had two children in 1930:  Nina G., born in 1916 and Betty S., born in 1925. 

Alexander Reece Henry died on October 1, 1966 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.  His last place of residence was in Garden Grove, Orange County, California.  He was 78 years old at his death.

Earl S. Boggess (1887-1936)

Earl S. Boggess was born on October 3, 1887 in Galla Creek Township, Pope County, Arkansas.  He was the eldest of four children born to William Clarence Boggess and Dora A. Reed.

Earl was raised on the family farm located on the Little Rock Fort Smith Highway in Galla Creek, Pope County, Arkansas.  He grew up near the farms of his father’s parents, and his Uncle Haise Boggess.

Earl married Mary "Hazel" Wren on October 21, 1914 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  Hazel was born in July 1896, the daughter of Thomas Lawson C Wren and Elizabeth "Bettie" May Gwin.  Hazel lived in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas.

Earl registered for World War I on June 5, 1917, at the age of 29.  He was a farmer and a “Sub Mail Carrier” at that time.  He was of medium height, stout, with grey eyes and dark brown hair.

The couple was divorced on September 9, 1925 in Pope County, Arkansas.  

Earl S. Boggess died on November 6, 1936 in Pope County, Arkansas, just one month after his 49^th birthday.

Raymond Oates Boggess (1912-1943)

Raymond Oates Boggess

Son of Arthur Haise Boggess & Magnolia Elizabeth Oates

Raymond Oates Boggess was born December 19, 1912 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  He was the youngest of eight children born to Arthur Haise Boggess and Magnolia Elizabeth Oates.  Raymond grew up on the family farm in Galla Creek in Pope County.  He labored on the farm while his father worked at the general store.  He was living with his family in 1930.

When he was about 30 years old, Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 24, 1942.  He was not married when he enlisted.  He had one year of college education and his Civil Occupation was that of a Blaster or Powderman.  He was 5’ 10” tall and slender, weighing in at 157 pounds.  He was a Private in the 161^st Infantry 25^th Division. 

Following is an excerpt from “A Brief History of the 25^th Infantry Division”:

   On 3 August 1942 the 298th Infantry Regiment was replaced by the 161st Infantry Regiment of the Washington National Guard which had been in route to the Philippine Islands when the Japanese attacked and was diverted to Hawaii. In November 1942 the Division underwent intensive jungle and amphibious warfare training and sailed for Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands to relieve the 1st Marine Division. The 25th operating as part of the XIV Corps commenced offensive operations against the Japanese on 7 January 1943. In less than a month and against a determined enemy who offered fierce resistance the 25th Division wiped out the Japanese dug in on Mount Austin and conducted an envelopment through the jungle to cut off retreating Japanese forces. For its valor on Mount Austin the 35th Infantry Regimental Combat Team consisting of the 35th Infantry Regiment, the 64th Field Artillery Battalion and the 25th Reconnaissance Troop was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. The operations of the 25th Division on Guadalcanal were impressive, earning it the nickname of "Tropic Lightning".

Raymond Oates Boggess was killed on January 27, 1943 in the conflict at Guadalcanal.  He was 30 years old at his death.

Raymond’s awards included the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart Medals.  He is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of The Pacific, located at 2177 Puowaina Drive Honolulu, HI 96813.  His burial plot is located in Section E, Site 295.

Harold Boggess (1903- )

Harold Boggess was born October 18, 1903 in Pottsville, Pope County, Arkansas.  He was the seventh of eight children born to Arthur Haise Boggess and Magnolia Elizabeth Oates. 

Harold was raised on the family farm in Galla Creek in Pope County.  He was attending school and living with his family in 1920.
