Myrtle Lee (1902-1987)

Myrtle Lee was born in 1902 in Court House, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was the daughter of Hugh F. Lee and Nettie M. Rust.  Myrtle was raised on the family farm in Court House, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.

Myrtle married David Myers Crick around 1919 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was 17 years old and he was 31 years.  David was born on August 16, 1888 in Court House, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the son of William Andrew Crick and Martha Jane Boggess.

Two years before his marriage, David registered for the draft for the First World War.  He registered in Muhlenberg County in June 1917.  At that time, David was working as a farmer.  He was described as tall, medium of build, with blue eyes and red hair.  David did not serve in the war.

After their marriage, David and Myrtle lived and worked on a farm in Court House, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.

David and Myrtle were the parents of four children:

Lenvil Jack Crick                  born September 6, 1920
Reva Nell Crick                    born June 3, 1922
Velma Louell Crick              born July 21, 1924
David Wendell Crick           born July 20, 1926

In 1930, David and Myrtle and their children were living on a farm on Long Creek Valley Road in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  David managed the farm and employed workers to keep it running.

By 1940, the Crick family was living and working on a farm on Highway 181 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.

David Myers Crick died on June 2, 1949 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He died as a result of a tractor accident while working on his farm.  David was buried in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was 60 years old at his death.

Myrtle remarried later that same year to a neighbor who had lost his wife several years before.  She married Elbert Taylor Grace on December 13, 1949 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  This was Elbert’s second marriage as well.  Elbert was born on August 1, 1892 in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the son of David O. Grace and Missouri A. Cook.

Elbert Taylor Grace died on December 28, 1968 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was laid to rest beside his first wife, Annie, in the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Weir, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Elbert was 76 years old at his death.

Myrtle remarried four years later to Harry Hall on January 19, 1973 in Logan County, Kentucky.  She was 70 years old and he was 83 years.  Harry was a widower from Todd County, Kentucky.  He was born on January 9, 1890 in Kentucky, the son of Josephus G. Hall and Carrie Maude McGehee.

Harry Hall died nine years later, on March 26, 1982 in Grayson County, Kentucky.  He was laid to rest next to his first wife, Mona Willis Hall, in the Slaughter Cemetery in Clifty, Todd County, Kentucky.  Harry was 92 years old at his death.

Myrtle Lee Crick Grace Hall died on May 1, 1987 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was 84 years old at her death.

Lois Ann Wells (1894-1949)

Lois Ann “Annie” Wells was born on August 22, 1894 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was the daughter of Jefferson Fontain Wells and Mattie Loutisha Johnston.  Annie was raised on the family farm in Court House, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.

Annie married Elbert Taylor Grace on July 2, 1911 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was 17 years old and he was 19 years.  Elbert was born on August 1, 1892 in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the son of David O. Grace and Missouri A. Cook.

Elbert and Annie were the parents of ten children:

After their marriage, Elbert and Annie settled on a farm in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, where they worked and raised their family.

Elbert registered for the draft for the First World War on June 5, 1917 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He claimed exemption from the draft because he was caring for his wife and children.  Elbert was described as tall, with blue eyes and brown hair.  He did not serve in the war.

Lois Ann Wells Grace died on April 17, 1931 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was buried in the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Weir, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Annie was 36 years old at her death.

In 1940, Elbert was living on Highway 181 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  His three youngest children were living with him.

Elbert remarried on December 13, 1949 to Myrtle Lee Crick, a widow.  They were married in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Myrtle was born on November 29, 1902 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the daughter of Hugh F. Lee and Nettie M. Rust.

Elbert Taylor Grace died on December 28, 1968 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was laid to rest beside his first wife, Annie, in the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Weir, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Elbert was 76 years old at his death.

Lavonia Nelson (1921-2000)

Lavonia Nelson was born on September 29, 1921 in Escambia County, Florida.  She was the daughter of John Dennis Nelson and Susan (maiden name unknown).  Lavonia was raised in Walton County, Florida.

Lavonia married Arnold Dudley Gainey on May 7, 1938 in Walton County, Florida.  She was 16 years old and he was 19 years.  Arnold was born on May 17, 1919 in Alaqua, Walton County, Florida, the son of Murdock Jackson Gainey and Mary Ida King.  Arnold had two brothers who also married into the Nelson family.  One brother, Willis, married Lavonia’s half-sister, Mollie; and another, Amos, married Lavonia’s half-sister, Nellie.

Arnold and Lavonia were the parents of three children:

Cathey Gainey

After their marriage, Arnold and Lavonia lived in a rented home in rural Walton County, Florida.  They were living near Arnold’s parents.  At that time, Arnold was employed in road construction.

Arnold enlisted for service in the army for World War II on July 11, 1944 at Camp Blanding in Walton County, Florida.  He was released from service on October 19, 1945.

Lavonia Nelson Gainey died on February 25, 2000 in Defuniak Springs, Walton County, Florida.  She was laid to rest in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Pleasant Ridge, Walton County, Florida.  Lavonia was 78 years old at her death.

Arnold Dudley Gainey died seven years later, on September 29, 2007 in Crestview, Okaloosa County, Florida.  He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Pleasant Ridge, Walton County, Florida.  Arnold was 88 years old at his death.

Arnold Dudley Gainey 1919 - 2007

            Mr. Arnold Gainey, age 88, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., passed away Sept. 29, 2007 in Crestview, Fla. He was born May 17, 1919, in Walton County, Florida to Murdock and Ida King Gainey.
            Mr. Gainey was a life long resident of Walton County, he was Apostolic by faith and a member of the First Apostolic Church of DeFuniak Springs. Arnold was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the United States Army, having fought at the Battle of the Bulge, he received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. His being awarded the Bronze Star was for his dedication for staying on the front lines until everyone had been evacuated safely home. He worked with Hodges Lumber Company and Louisiana Pacific for over 20 years.
            Mr. Gainey was preceded in death by his father and mother; his loving wife, Lavonia Gainey; one daughter, Bobbie Gainey; four brothers, Amos, Willis, Wilson and M.T. Gainey; and three sisters, Bama Hamilton, Anna Belle Hamilton and Bessie Mae Wright.
            Mr. Gainey is survived by one son, William R. Gainey and wife Dianne of Pensacola, Fla.; one daughter, Cathey Gorum of DeFuniak Springs; three grandchildren, Deedra Linder and husband Robert, Derrick Gainey and wife Kaye and Krysten Gorum; and one great-granddaughter, Emalie Linder.
            A time of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home, 230 Park Ave., DeFuniak Springs, FL 32435.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, in the Chapel at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home, 230 Park Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, with the Rev. David King officiating.
            Burial will follow in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, with military honors.
            Clary-Glenn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mollie Nelson (1910-1988)

Mollie Nelson was born on December 17, 1910 in Georgia.  She was the daughter of John Dennis Nelson and Minnie Marie (maiden name unknown).  Mollie was raised living and working on a farm in Clinch County, Georgia. 

Mollie married Willis Welborn Gainey on January 19, 1929 in Walton County, Florida.  She was 18 years old and he was 19 years.  Willis was born on July 16, 1909 in Walton County, Florida, the son of Murdock Jackson Gainey and Mary Ida King.  Willis had two brothers who also married into the Nelson family.  One brother, Arnold, married Mollie’s half-sister, Lavonia; and another, Amos, married Mollie’s sister, Nellie.

Willis and Mollie had at least two children:

Minnie N. Gainey     born 1931
W.G. Gainey             born 1933

After their marriage, the couple settled next to the home of Willis’ parents in Upper Alaqua, Walton County, Florida.  Willis worked alongside his father on the family farm.

In 1940, Willis and Mollie and their children were living in the rural area of Walton County, Florida.  Willis was working at a saw mill, which he owned.

Willis Welborn Gainey died on February 11, 1969 in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida.  He was buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Pleasant Ridge, Walton County, Florida.  Willis was 59 years old at his death.

Mollie Nelson Gainey went on to live another 19 years after the death of her husband.  Mollie died on January 17, 1988 in Escambia County, Florida.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Pleasant Ridge, Walton County, Florida.  Mollie was 77 years old at her death.

Nellie Nelson (1908-1993)

Nellie Nelson was born on March 28, 1908 in Georgia.  She was the daughter of John Dennis Nelson and Minnie Marie (maiden name unknown).  Nellie was raised living and working on a farm in Clinch County, Georgia. 

In 1935, Nellie and her parents were living with her brother, Harley, and his family in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida.  At that time, Nellie was working at a canning plant.

Nellie married Amos Jackson Gainey on April 4, 1942 in Walton County, Florida.  This was Amos’ third marriage.  Amos was born on December 11, 1907 in Walton County, Florida, the son of Murdock Jackson Gainey and Mary Ida King.  Amos had two brothers who also married into the Nelson family.  One brother, Arnold, married Nellie’s half-sister, Lavonia; and another, Willis, married Nellie’s sister, Mollie.

Amos Jackson Gainey died on June 21, 1992 in Escambia County, Florida.  He was 84 years old at his death.

Nellie Nelson Gainey died one year later, on October 17, 1993 in Santa Rosa County, Florida.  She was 86 years old at her death.

Arlie Nelson (1905-1961)

Arlie Nelson was born in 1905 in Georgia.  She was the daughter of John Dennis Nelson and Minnie Marie (maiden name unknown).  Arlie was raised living and working on a farm in Clinch County, Georgia. 

Arlie married James Mathew Rushing on March 1, 1930 in Walton County, Florida.  She was 25 years old and he was 27 years.  James was born on April 13, 1903 in Red Bay, Walton County, Florida, the son of James Noah Rushing and Ella Bozeman.

James and Arlie were the parents of six children:

James Clifton Rushing       born August 12, 1933
Lillie Mae Rushing              born 1935
Cecil Rushing                      born 1936
Hazel Rushing                     born 1939
Minnie Pearl Rushing        born August 5, 1942

Shortly after their marriage, James and Arlie were living with James’ widowed mother in Euchee Anna, Walton County, Florida.  James was working for the Railroad at that time.

By 1935, James and Arlie were renting a home in Walton County, Florida for $50 a month.

James Mathew Rushing died in April 1961 in Polk County, Florida.  He was buried near his infant son in the Red Bay Cemetery in Red Bay, Walton County, Florida.  James was 58 years old at his death.

Arlie Nelson Rushing died just one month later, in June 1961 in Polk County, Florida.  She was laid to rest beside her husband and infant son in the Red Bay Cemetery in Red Bay, Walton County, Florida.  Arlie was 56 years old at her death.

Harley Clayton Nelson (1902-1974)

Harley Clayton Nelson was born on August 25, 1902 in Georgia.  He was the son of John Dennis Nelson and Minnie Marie (maiden name unknown).  Harley was raised living and working on a farm in Clinch County, Georgia. 

Harley married Dezzie Angie English on January 31, 1924 in Escambia County, Florida.  He was 21 years old and she was 16 years.  Dezzie was born on March 25, 1908 in
Alabama, the daughter of Joseph English and Jessie Elizabeth Ard.

Harley and Dezzie were the parents of at least eight children:

In 1930, Harley and Dezzie were renting a place near Wright Avenue in De Funiak Springs, Escambia County, Florida.  At that time, Harley was employed as a salesman at a “retail fruit store.”

By 1934, Harley and Dezzie had moved their family to 1242 Oak Hill Drive in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida. 

In 1940, Harley and Dezzie and their children were living at 1913 Gonzales Street in the rural area of Escambia County, Florida.

Harley Clayton Nelson died on June 15, 1974 in Escambia County, Florida.  He was buried in the Pensacola Memorial Gardens in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida. Harley was 71 years old at his death.

Dezzie Angie English Nelson died on March 5, 1980 in Escambia County, Florida.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Pensacola Memorial Gardens in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida.  Dezzie was just a few weeks shy of 72 years old at her death.
