James Morton Boggess (1900-1969)

James Morton Boggess was born on November 26, 1900, presumably in Driskill, Livingston County, Kentucky.  He was the fourth of seven children born to Edmond Dargan Boggess & Sarah Agnes Terrill, and ultimately the fourth of eight children born to Edmond.  James was raised as the son of a clergyman, and thus moved several times with his family during his youth. 

In 1920, James was living with his eldest brother, John, and his new bride, Viola, along with her mother, Carrie Bowles.  They were all living at 1381 South Street in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  James was employed as a clerk for the railroad at that time.

James married Elsie A. Geiser on April 1, 1924 in Clark County, Indiana.  They were both 23 years old at their marriage.  Elsie was born on December 26, 1900, and she was exactly one month younger than James.  Elsie was the daughter of Frederick Geiser and Margarethe Eberle.  Elsie was born in Kentucky and both of her parents were born in Switzerland.  This was Elsie’s second marriage.  Her first marriage was to Clifford B. Dye on September 24, 1921 in Clark County, Indiana.  They divorced in 1923. 

James and Elsie had at least one child:

Marion Morton Boggess     born November 23, 1924

James and Elsie were living in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey in 1930.  They were renting a place at 17 Evylyn Place for $50.50 per month.  James managed fire insurance at that time. 

James and Elsie moved to Florida sometime after 1937, where they lived the remainder of their lives. 

James Morton Boggess died in December 1969 in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida.  He had just turned 69 years old. 

Elsie went on to live another 30 years after the death of her husband.  She died on September 12, 1999 in Saint Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida.  She was just three months shy of her 99^th birthday.

Eva Grace Boggess was born on February 7, 1905, most likely in Driskill, Livingston County, Kentucky. She lived just ten days, passing away on February 17, 1905.  Eva was buried in the East Providence Cemetery in Prentiss, Ohio County, Kentucky.

John Edward Millen, Sr. (1876-1956)

John Edward Millen, Sr. was born on July 5, 1876 in Trigg County, Kentucky.  He was the son of James M. Millen, Jr. and Sarah Agnes Terrell.  John was raised in Trigg County.

John married Mary Louise Thompson on January 17, 1900 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  He was 23 years old and she was 17 years.  Mary was born on February 3, 1880 in Hampden, Prince Edward County, Virginia, the daughter of the Reverend George Eagleton Thompson and Cora Caldwell Dinwiddie. 

John and Mary were the parents of five children:

James Millen                       born 1909

Robert D. Millen                  born August 30, 1910

John Edward Millen, Jr.      born September 17, 1914

John and Mary lost their first child on January 26, 1905.  Shirley was buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton, Todd County, Kentucky.  She was just four years old at her death.

In 1910, John and Mary and their children were living on Front Street in Boxville, Todd County, Kentucky.  John was working for the railroad at that time and employed as a yard master.

Mary Louise Thompson Millen died on June 1, 1918 in Guthrie, Todd County, Kentucky.  The cause of death was blood poisoning.  Mary was buried near her daughter in the Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton, Todd County, Kentucky.  She was 38 years old at her death.

Just three months after the death of his wife, John registered for the draft for the First World War.  He registered on September 12, 1918 in Elkton, Todd County, Kentucky.  He was described as tall and slender, with brown eyes and hair.  John did not serve in the war.

John remarried around 1919 to Marian Frances Boggess.  They were married in Guthrie, Todd County, Kentucky.  Marian was born in April 1898 in Henderson County, Kentucky, the daughter of Edmond Dargan Boggess & Sarah Agnes Terrill. 

In 1920, John and Marian were living on Park Street in Guthrie, Todd County, Kentucky.  John’s widowed mother was also listed in the household.

Marian died on October 13, 1939 in Shively, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  The cause of death was cervical cancer.  She was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  Marian was 41 years old at her death.

John Edward Millen, Sr. died on October 7, 1956 in Florida.  He was laid to rest beside his first wife, Mary, in the Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton, Todd County, Kentucky.  He was 80 years old at his death.

Hayden B. Boggess (1897-1973)

Hayden B. Boggess was born in February 1897, presumably in Henderson County, Kentucky.  He was the second of seven children Edmond Dargan Boggess & Sarah Agnes Terrill, and ultimately the second of eight children born to Edmond.  Hayden was raised as the son of a clergyman, and thus moved several times with his family during his youth.

Hayden was a veteran of the First World War, having enlisted for service on June 4, 1918.  He was released one year later on August 18, 1919.

In 1920, Hayden was living with his parents in their home on Poplar Street in Sacremento, McLean County, Kentucky.  He was working as a salesman at a dry goods store at that time.  

In 1930, he was working on his father’s farm in Greenville, Muhlenberg County.  Hayden lived with his parents at least until 1930. 

Hayden married Ruby L. Allen around 1934 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was about 37 years old and she was around 30 years.  Ruby was born on March 24, 1904 in Court House, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the daughter of Louis B. Allen and Nannie Craig.

Hayden and Ruby were the parents of five children:

Walton L. Boggess              born November 10, 1935

Franklin T. Boggess            born August 22, 1937

Daisy Nell Boggess             born August 12, 1939

Mary Belle Boggess            born August 12, 1939

Wilma J. Boggess                born December 28, 1941

After their marriage, Hayden and Ruby made their home in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  They were living near the family of Ruby’s brother, Wendell, in 1940.  Hayden was working as a salesman at a general store at that time.

Hayden B. Boggess died on February 26, 1973 in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was buried in the Bivins Cemetery in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Hayden died two weeks after his 76^th birthday. 

Ruby L. Allen Boggess died fifteen years after the death of her husband.  Ruby died on August 7, 1988 in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Bivins Cemetery in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Ruby was 84 years old at her death.

John Wesley Boggess (1895-1957)

John Wesley Boggess

Son of Edmond Dargan Boggess & Sarah Agnes Terrill

 

John Wesley Boggess was born in June 12, 1896, presumably in Henderson County, Kentucky.  He was the eldest of seven children Edmond Dargan Boggess and Sarah A. Terrill, and ultimately the eldest of eight children born to Edmond.  John was raised as the son of a clergyman, and thus moved several times with his family during his youth.

John enlisted for service for the First World War on October 8, 1917, at the age of 21 years.  He served in the medical department at Army Headquarters Co. 1 in the B.H. Group at Camp Greenleaf, Georgia.  He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant 1^st Class on December 27, 1918.   

John married Viola M. Bowles around 1919, probably in McLean County, Kentucky.  He was around 23 years old and she was around 33 years.  Viola was born on June 24, 1884 in Kentucky, the daughter of Thomas Knight Bowles and Carrie O. Gillette.

Shortly after their marriage, John and Viola moved to 1381 South Street in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  John’s younger brother, James, and Viola’s mother, Carrie Bowles, were living with them in 1920.  John and Viola had two children:

            John Knight              born 1922

John and Viola divorced in September 1924.

John was living in a rented room on Fourth Street in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1930.  He was listed as a veteran of the First World War.  

John married Mary Helen Langford on May 30, 1931 in Mount Vernon, Fayette County, Kentucky.  She was 30 and he was 37 years old.  Mary was born on November 12, 1899, the daughter of James Stephen "Tip" Langford and Dona Temple Childress.  

By 1935, John and Mary were living in Mount Vernon, Rock Castle County, Kentucky, where he found work as a salesman for a retail clothing store.

John and Mary had one child:

                    James D. Boggess        born December 27, 1932

Meanwhile, the 1930 and 1940 census’ found Viola in Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama, living with her children and widowed mother.  To provide for her children and aged mother, Viola was employed as a book keeper at a bank in Decatur.  The census listed Viola as a widow at that time, but that was incorrect.

John Wesley Boggess died on September 1, 1957 at the Kentucky Baptist Hospital in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  He and Mary were living on Dersey Way in Anchorage, Jefferson County, Kentucky, where John was working as an administrative assistant in Louisville at the time of his death.  The cause of death was listed as stomach cancer.  John was 61 years old at his death.  He was buried in Resthaven Memorial Park in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.

On April 24, 1959, James D. Boggess and Mary H. Boggess applied for a Military Veteran headstone on behalf of John Wesley Boggess.  The mailing address for both was Box 196, Rte. 1, Anchorage, Jefferson County, Kentucky.

Viola M. Bowles Boggess died on February 4, 1971 in Tescumbia, Colbert County, Alabama.  She was 86 years old at her death.  Viola was buried in the Roselawn Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama.

Mrs. Viola Boggess, 86, of 309 River Bluff Dr., Sheffield, died Thursday at 10:15am.

Graveside services will be conducted at Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur Saturday at 2pm.  Morrison-Elkins of Tuscumbia is in charge.  She was a native of Kentucky and had lived here a number of years.

Surviving are a son, John Boggess, of Panama City, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Hurley Cheatham, Sheffield.

Edmond Dargan Boggess (1859-1938)

Edmond Dargan Boggess

Son of Lemuel Boggess, Jr. & Frances Dargan Adkins

Edmond Dargan Boggess was born September 29, 1859 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was the seventh of eleven children born to Lemuel Boggess, Jr. and Frances D. Adkins.  He and the other children were raised working on the family farm in Muhlenberg County. 

           

Edmond married Sarah Agnes Terrill on July 25, 1894 in Henderson County, Kentucky.  He was 36 years old and she was 22 years.  Sarah was born in May 1873 in Kentucky, the daughter Jackson Morton Terrill and Miriam Leavell.  

Edmond and Sarah had at least seven children:

            John Wesley              born June 1895

            Hayden B.                 born February 1897

            Marianne F.              born April 1898

            James Morton            born November 26, 1900

            Eva Grace                 born February 7, 1905

            Edmund D. Jr.          born 1906

            Walter B.                    born 1911

Sarah must have died between 1911 and 1916, as Edmond remarried in 1917. 

Edmond married Mary Elizabeth Sheridan Armstrong on December 28, 1916 in Sacremento, McLean County, Kentucky.  This was Mary’s first marriage.  She was 36 years old at that time, and Edmond was 58 years.  Mary was born on August 24, 1880 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, the daughter of Samuel Robert Armstrong and Charlotte Ann Morgan.

Edmond and Mary had at least one child together:

            Rachel A.                  born 1919

As a result of Edmond’s career as a clergyman, he and his family relocated several times.  In 1900, Edmond and Sarah were living in Driskill, Livingston County, Kentucky.  Edmond’s widowed mother, and his elder sister, Martha, were living in his household at that time.  1910 found Edmond and his family in Morganfield, Union County, Kentucky.  Then by 1920, they had moved to Sacremento, McLean County, Kentucky.  Finally, Edmond returned to his nativity and had settled on a farm in Muhlenberg County by 1930.

Edmond Dargan Boggess died on June 11, 1938 in the county of his birth.  He died in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky at the age of 78 years.  He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

After the death of her husband, Mary and her daughter, Rachel, went to live with Mary’s sister, Fannie Armstrong.  Her home was on New Cut Road in Jefferson County, Kentucky. 

Mary Elizabeth Sheridan Armstrong Boggess died on May 10, 1967 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  She was 86 years old at her death.
