James L. Robertson (1820-1880)

James L. Robertson was born around 1820 in Kentucky.

James married Martha Ann Clift around 1845 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  James was around 24 years and Martha was about 21 years.  Martha was born in 1823 in Kentucky.

James and Martha were the parents of at least 13 children:

(Infant Son) Robertson                   born September 10, 1844
George W. Robertson                     born 1845
Catharine Leticia Robertson          born 1846
John W. Robertson                         born 1849
William C. Robertson                      born 1851
Horace L. Robertson                       born June 3, 1852
H. E. Robertson                               born 1853
James L. Robertson                       born September 30, 1854
Charles Robertson                          born 1857
Anna E. Robertson                          born 1859
Wadkins Robertson                         born 1862
James A. Robertson                        born 1862
Jinnie Robertson                             born 1864

Four of James’ and Martha’s children died young.  Their firstborn child lived only six weeks, passing away on October 20, 1844.  Their sons, Horace and James both died on January 25, 1858.  They were six years and four years, respectively.  John was not listed in the 1860 US Census, so it is assumed that he died before then.  These children were buried in the Browder’s Church Cemetery in Hopkins County, Kentucky.

After their marriage, James and Martha settled their family on a farm in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  In 1850, James was employed as a constable, and owned real estate valued at $800.

By 1860, James’ real estate was valued at $8,000 and his personal estate was worth $10,000.  The Robertson family had a dozen slaves working their land; five males and seven females.

Martha A. Robertson died on July 29, 1867 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  She was laid to rest near the four children she and James buried in the Browder’s Church Cemetery in Hopkins County, Kentucky.

James remarried the next year to Pauline Earle, a widow.  They were married on June 30, 1868 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  This was the second marriage for both.  Pauline was born on August 11, 1845 in Union County, Kentucky, the daughter of Richard Gregory and Sarah F. Waggener.

In 1870, James and Pauline were living and working on a farm in Caseyville, Union County, Kentucky.  Listed in the household were James’ five youngest children, as well as Pauline’s daughter.

James L. Robertson died sometime before 1880, as Pauline was listed as a widow in that census.
