John D. Boggess (1849-bef 1860)

John D. Boggess

John D. Boggess was born in 1849 in Henry County, Tennessee.  He was the first of eleven children born to Lemuel Boggess, Jr. and Frances D. Adkins.  John died before 1860, as he was not listed in that census, or any thereafter.

Also, Frances was listed in the 1900 U.S. census as being the mother of eleven children, with seven still living.  The four children who are unaccounted for are: John, Elizabeth, Sarah, and one more child who must have been born and died before 1900.

Lemuel Boggess, Jr. (1828-bef 1900)

Lemuel Boggess, Jr.

Lemuel Boggess, Jr. was born on September 3, 1828 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  He was the second son and the fourth of six children born to Lemuel and Rachel Boggess.  His father died when Lemuel was about five years old, and his mother remarried three years later.  He grew up on the family farm in Muhlenberg, and eventually became the fourth eldest of thirteen children.

On October 24, 1848, Lemuel married Frances Dargan Adkins in Henry County, Tennessee.  He was 20 years old and she was 25 years.  Frances was born in April 1824 in North Carolina.  After their marriage, Lemuel and Frances made their home in Henry County, Tennessee, where Lemuel was a farmer.

Around 1855, they moved their family to Lemuel’s place of nativity in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  Lemuel and Frances were the parents of eleven children as follows:

                        1.  John D.                        born 1849
                        2.  Elizabeth Jane            born 1851
                        3.  Sarah F.                      born 1852
                        4.  Martha A.                     born December 1855
                        5.  James Lemuel            born August 1856
                        6.  George R.                   born 1858
                        7.  Edmond Dargan        born September 1859
                        8.  Allice A.                       born 1861
                        9.  Roxanna                     born 1864
                        10. May                            born 1868
                        11.  (Child)                       born 1870

Lemuel Boggess, Jr died sometime before 1900, as Frances was listed as a widow in that census.  Frances Dargan Adkins Boggess died on January 22, 1908, probably in Livingston County, Kentucky.  She was three months shy of her 84th birthday.

Elizabeth Boggess (1826-1891)

Elizabeth Boggess

Elizabeth Boggess was born on September 3, 1826 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.  She was the second daughter and the third of six children born to Lemuel and Rachel Boggess.  Her father died when Elizabeth was about 7 years old, and her mother remarried three years later.  She grew up on the family farm in Muhlenberg, and eventually became the third eldest of thirteen children.

Elizabeth married Aspasia William Earle, but the actual date has been difficult to verify.  It is a popular notion (as documented on numerous websites) that Elizabeth and Aspasia married in 1835 in Muhlenberg, Kentucky.  However, this may not be the case.  If Elizabeth married Aspasia in 1835, that would make her around nine years old at her marriage.  Also, Elizabeth is most likely the child, aged between 10 and 15 years, listed in the John Wickliffe household in 1840.  This also makes her marriage to Aspasia in 1835 highly unlikely.  If the date is wrong, one might assume she and Aspasia were married around 1845, which would be much more agreeable.  If the marriage date is in fact closer to 1845, then Elizabeth would have been around 19 years old and Aspasia about 30 years.  Aspasia William Earle was born on September 25, 1815 in Kentucky.

After their marriage, Aspasia and Elizabeth made their home Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky, where Aspasia worked as a farmer.

In 1870, Josephine Earle, a niece, was living with Aspasia and Elizabeth.  Then in 1880, Ida Boggess and Edna Martin (a niece and grandniece, respectively) were living in the Earle household.

There is no record of any children born to Aspasia and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Boggess Earle died on April 29, 1891, in Hopkins County, Kentucky.  She was 64 years old.  Her husband died two years and eleven months later.

Aspasia William Earle died on March 23, 1893 in the same county.  He was 77 years old at his death.
